Shawn Marion is easily the best defender in Suns history.
I guess he was always right, no respect for the man.
Paul Silas, Dennis Johnson and Don Buse all might have something to say about that!
I honestly wasn't around for any of them. Well, I think DJ played in my first in-person Suns game, but I don't remember much about it and it was the only game I ever watched until 1988.
Did those guys all guard multiple positions as well as Shawn did?
Silas was NBA all-defensive team 5 times between 1970-71 and 1975-76, DJ was 8 times between 1978-79 and 1986-87, Jason Kidd was nine times between 1988-89 to 2006-07 and Buse was ABA or NBA all-defensive 6 times between 1974-75 and 1979-80.
Shawn Marion, zero.
Of course Marion was a great defender, but I think we have overstated how good he was a little - he probably deserved to be named to the all-defensive team a couple of times, but his resume just doesn't hold up to the others. I might even put Larry Nance (3 times all-defensive, but all with Cleveland) ahead of him as well.

Ayton Played like a man. Paul and Booker fucking suck. I’m so over this tandem. They play like absolute selfish losers
Paul had an awful game as well. So many turnovers. He seems to have lost a step.
A lot of them seemed to just be bad passes. I'm hoping it's from being unfamiliar with his new teammates and that it'll work itself out.

Marion was hurt by the fact that he was the only one playing defense for a lot of those suns teams. He had legitimate 1-5 switch ability. He doubled as a lockdown defender and an incredible help defender. It’s a travesty he never was named all-defense.
Majerle was really solid, he didn't have the quickness to keep up with some guys, but he always put in the effort and made the offensive player work to get his points.

this. how often do guys make All-defensive teams when their team leads the league in offense and nobody else plays defense? I feel like if your team isn't a top 10 defensive team (maybe top 5), you don't get nods to the all-defense team.
Shit game, the offense is regressing overall. Book is all out of sorts, we're trying to force things with Ayton and teams have learned to stay out on shooters and force guys to put to the ball on the floor. Paul isn't a .5 offense guy and I think his ball dominance has hurt Book. Doesn't mean it can't work, just that there's got to be a better balance.
Yes, lots to work out still. Our offense needs to be more natural and not so forced. Paul has to take his shots when defenders drop off of him to cover DA.

I went to a game at the Madhouse when Barkley was still on the Sixers. Majerle frustrated Barkley so badly with his defensive intensity. May have been Majerle's rookie year.

probably not his rookie year. That game Chuck had 22/12 on 62% shooting.

The next year in Phoenix he had 12/4, though.
That must have been it! Thanks for looking up the deets.

No problem. I mean, how often was Chuck only getting 12 points a game back then, and only 4 boards?
OK, so I had to look that up. He got 4 boards or less only 4 times that season. And scored 12 or less only 6 times. His game against us here was his 2nd worst game of the year (by bbref's GmSc stat).

That's wild. Majerle was up in his grill the whole game and was visibly frustrated.
