Do we know yet if Durant is a James Jones type of player? For starters, I'm not sure he has what it takes to date Monty's daughter.
I guess I missed something. Been seeing this over and over. Please explain.
Monty said Shamet was the type of person he would want to marry his daughter when we gave up a pick and a player and signed him to a multi-year contract before he ever played a minute for us.
OK, thanks. :)
I think he said it about Cam Johnson (too).

That's only if he's REALLY mad. Usually it's more like "doggone".

If an employee says they want to quit to go work for a competitor, and you say, but I will give you 3% more per year to try and keep them... not a smart move. Let the person leave and wish them success. They clearly don't want to be there. Paying extra for a disgruntled employee only hurts morale and team chemistry.
You can ask him to honor his 90 day notice.

He’s a RFA. Honor it. Rather sign the QO, find us a sign and trade that improves our team as well, or we match.

DA can leave on his free will in a year. Until then , he has a contractual obligation to us. It’s just good business. We’re not in a position to let an asset just go.
I wasn't saying don't match. I was saying it would be dumb for the Suns to now sign him to the max contract.
The only rationale I can think of is that the Suns could lock up a cheaper 5th year then it would otherwise cost them on 4 year max deal that is later extended. One of Hollinger's articles from last fall suggested that most teams want to lock in that 5th year due to the value.

I'm too lazy to run the numbers myself, but maybe someone more industrious could do that.

If the Suns gave him a max deal for 5 years, it would be:

30.5/32.94/35.58/38.42/41.49 for a total of 178.9M.

Yeah I guess you could say that IF Ayton turns into a top 15 player in the league he could be worth more than 42M in a few years. But you have to really believe that if you are going to give him 180M of guaranteed money and hope he works hard to get better.

$41M will be given to bench players by 2026.

Lol, that’s not true…except in the sense that there will probably be some John Wall type who signs a massive deal he’s not worth and gets hurt.

Obviously I'm exaggerating but my point is that it won't just be top 15 players who make over $41 million. It would be a good value for the 5th year, well under a starting max contract.

You really think ~50 players will be making over 41M/year in 2026?

It would take the cap jumping roughly 75% for that to happen. Right now the 50th highest paid player makes 23.4 million. A 75% increase pushes that to 41…I know the cap will jump, but I don’t expect that high. That would put the overall cap at 213 million.

Top ten salaries 5 years ago vs. now -

2017-18
Stephen Curry, GSW - $34,682,550
LeBron James, CLE - $33,285,709
Paul Millsap, DEN - $30,769,231
Gordon Hayward, BOS - $29,727,900
Blake Griffith, LAC - $29,512,900
Kyle Lowry, TOR - $28,703,704
Mike Conley, MEM - $28,530,608
James Harden, HOU - $28,299,399
Russell Westbrook, OKC - $28,299,399
DeMar DeRozan, TOR - $27,739,975
Average - $29,955,137

2021-22
Stephen Curry, GSW - $48,070,014
John Wall, HOU - $47,366,760
James Harden, PHI - $47,366,760
Russell Westbrook, LAL - $47,063,478
LeBron James, LAL - $44,474,988
Kevin Durant, BRK - $44,119,845
Paul George, LAC - $42,492,568
Kawhi Leonard, LAC - $42,492,492
Giannis Antetokounmpo, MIL - $42,492,492
Damian Lillard, POR - $42,492,492
Average - $44,843,189

5-year increase - 47.9%

At this rate in 2025-26 the top 10 salaries would average $66 million. And it could be higher with the new television agreement coming.

$38.42 million in 2025-26 is the roughly equivalent of about $26 million now, which I think almost all of us would agree is a reasonable salary for Ayton. $26 million would be equal to what DeMar DeRozan made last year, which ranked 41st in the league. Less than Chris Paul ($30.8 million) and Devin Booker ($31.6 million) made.

sorry, just looked it up. The 50th highest contract is 20.5M this past season. I can't look it up from 5 years ago because spotrac requires a premium membership...

Right now there are 40 players set to make $30 million or more this season, and there will likely be a few additions.

50th highest in 2017-18 was John Wall & DeMarcus Cousins at $18,063,850
50th highest in 2022-23 (so far) is Julius Randle at $23,760,000

I just saw someone say that the only way all sides could reconcile and not lose face would be for Ayton to get more money from us than any other team could offer him, even if that is over 5 years instead of 4. If so, would everyone be happy with a:

5 year, 133M contract (probably with player option for year 5)

Code: Select all

Yr1 Yr2 Yr3 Yr4 Yr5 Tot
24.0 25.2	26.5	27.8	29.1	132.6
