I called this thread the latest military hardware but I use it for any new tech hardware.

Porn is about to get uncomfortably high-res thanks to new OLED tech
https://www.inputmag.com/tech/porn-is-a ... -oled-tech

Researchers from Samsung and Stanford University have created a new OLED display with a resolution of more than 10,000 pixels per inch (PPI). For comparison, the display in Apple's latest iPhone 12 has a resolution of 460 PPI. Aside from making for killer TVs, the new high-resolution screens are going to be perfect for virtual reality headsets. And where there's an evolution in VR, adult content is sure to follow.

APPLICATIONS IN VR — Displays with super high resolutions would be most useful in applications where the screen sits, umm, close to your face. One of the biggest issues facing VR is that it hasn't been as immersive as it could be because of low screen resolutions.

Inside the industry, the "screen door effect" is a term used to refer to the fact that the wearer of a headset can see individual pixels when the screen is so close to their face, making it look like the mesh on a screen door. But at 10,000 PPI, the pixels are so densely packed you probably wouldn't be able to make out the shape of them individually, even with them right up to your eyes.

Check out the VR shoes and complete VR Treadmill below it.

I thought the screen door effect was that people can see the space between pixels, not individual pixels. Either way, if the space between a pixel is 2-3 microns, and the human eye supposedly can only see something as small as 100 microns, this would eliminate that by a long shot.

:)

Did you check out the treadmill gaming platform thingy? It looks a little dangerous but, I could see where that would making gaming more realistic and more physically active. You could make fitness games that work you out while having fun skiing down the Himalayas.

I have seen that treadmill before (or maybe a competitor, but it was almost exactly the same) and I think that is great. I like the idea a lot and will be important to get VR to really take off. The trick will be pricing...

Porn has always driven display and video capabilities. Sad but true.
Wormwood/Superbone 2019/2020 season bet: Suns win < 30 games, Wormwood wins, else 'Bone wins. 1 month avatar shame starting July 1st of winner's choosing. ACCOMPLISHED! 34 wins in a shortened season! Like it mattered. We rarely see Wormwood anyway!

(Not that this is where you were going, but) I saw some evidence recently that says the stories about VHS vs Beta being driven by porn are not true. I had heard that forever, and was surprised to see it wasn't accurate.

Interesting as I have always heard the same. I'd be interested in checking out your sources.

After I heard someone lay it out, I went looking for other sources. There were plenty around, but the wikipedia page on the format war summed it up well (with references):

OK, that's a little different when talking about how it may have affected the format war. I heard it more in relationship to it being a driving force for videotape technology in general. Not in relation to one format over the other.

The Air Force Is Putting Death Rays on Fighter Jets. Yes, Death Rays.

The U.S. Air Force is working with Lockheed Martin to deploy lasers on fighter jets by 2025.
The SHiELD program will allow fighter jets to shoot down incoming missiles.
Unlike guns, lasers have an almost infinite ammunition supply.

If they’re designed to shoot down missiles, they’re not really Death Rays, are they?

If they are capable of tracking missiles in flight, while they are also in flight, they could probably scramble our brains from in flight too.

Self-driving robotaxis are taking off in China
https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/03/tech/aut ... index.html

The world has been inching toward fully autonomous cars for years. In China, one company just got even closer to making it a reality.

On Thursday, AutoX, an Alibaba (BABA)-backed startup, announced it had rolled out fully driverless robotaxis on public roads in Shenzhen. The company said it had become the first player in China to do so, notching an important industry milestone.

This program is different. In Shenzhen, AutoX has completely removed the backup driver or any remote operators for its local fleet of 25 cars, it said. The government isn't restricting where in the city AutoX operates, though the company said they are focusing on the downtown area.

Not even close to military hardware. I should have named the thread new tech.

A Monster Wind Turbine Is Upending an Industry
https://dnyuz.com/2021/01/01/a-monster- ... -industry/
Twirling above a strip of land at the mouth of Rotterdam’s harbor is a wind turbine so large it is difficult to photograph. The turning diameter of its rotor is longer than two American football fields end to end. Later models will be taller than any building on the mainland of Western Europe.

The G.E. machines will have a generating capacity that would have been almost unimaginable a decade ago. A single one will be able to turn out 13 megawatts of power, enough to light up a town of roughly 12,000 homes.
