Trying to kill himself? I think he thinks he deserves to die. But he was too cowardly to let it happen (again). I think it fit his character well.

I am not sure they sold his distraught-ness enough to make that as believable as it should have been. Clearly the plot needed that to happen to save Rick (and the group, by proxy).

I am not sure if I really like Gabriel or really like the actor. But I think he needs to stay around a bit more. I can see him switching sides if something crazy happens (and it always does). That could be a really good dynamic.

And they need to always have at least 1 Wire cast member on the show. He is the only one left right now, so until they bring in another, he has to stay. They were up to 3 at one point.

I find spoiler tags wildly annoying when you actually want to talk about a show. Can we just open up a spoiler thread instead? Frankly, the stuff qualifying as spoilers above is almost negligible, but if we're going to talk Walking Dead, then let's actually talk.

I don't really get all the Gabriel hate. Sure, he's not the most exciting character, but that's because he's got a role and he's filling it well. He managed to mostly get by without having to turn savage, but then he had to get rescued by a different type of savage...his experience in the zombie wasteland is equal parts zombies, humans trying to kill him and the group, and the group doing some pretty awful things to stay alive. What would be stupid and annoying is if he had jumped in with the crew, then was picking up a gun and plugging raiders in the head two episodes later. He is, at this point, the most human person left in Rick's crew. And it's pretty clear that because of that, he wants nothing to do with Rick's crew, because they may not be the worst out there, but they are Bad People.

He's a great character to have in Alexandria, too. On the one hand, he owes his life to the crew many times over. On the other, he's (probably rightly) terrified of what them being in Alexandria will do to the otherwise peaceful town...so he ratted them out. That may have struck some as annoying, but for me, it was actually quite ballsy. All he has seen this group do is kill people/undead who get in their way. Usually worse people, but that's not the point. It was actually a very big play for him to make, and I'm curious where it goes. He probably thinks Rick would kill him if he found out...he's wrong. Rick wouldn't. Carole would.

Also, a spoiler that surely everyone has figured out by now, mixed in with some random history that I can't share without providing the spoiler:

While history talks about THE BURNING of the Library of Alexandria, in fact, it was partially burned several times, and it seems there isn't all that much evidence to support that one, huge, catastrophic inferno that wiped out pretty much everything that had been recorded at the time. However, Emperor Theodosius made paganism illegal in the late 390s, and the local in Alexandria decided to close the doors. This, effectively, destroyed the library forever (it was looted nicely, so don't worry).

I don't expect that the writers will stick too closely to the actual history when it comes time for the town to burn. They interviewed in the library when they came to town. There will be flames. Lots of flames.

I'm so accustomed to having people binge watch that it's become habit at this point.

If they follow the Alexandria story line in the comics, next season is going to be incredibly dark.

So the fact that he shuttered and barricaded the church, not allowing parishioners in while walkers were invading and killing has no bearing on our judgment of him?

He's the worst sort of coward, hiding behind the privilege and position of his religion when it can protect him.

Yup. Big time hypocrite. Not saying he's beyond redemption, but he is a highly-flawed point guar . . . err, character.

He's a metaphor for those who defend religious institutions at the expense of the people the institutions were created to serve.

There are numerous existential/ethical dilemmas woven into the series, which makes it worth watching.
