2023 midterm elections

Post by Mori Chu »

There was an election day yesterday, Tue 11/7, in several states. Let's discuss the results. Overall it looks like the Dems did well in most states.

Here are some links to summaries of the results:

https://apnews.com/article/election-202 ... 8007d07eef
https://abcnews.go.com/538/live-updates ... =104679542

Here are some specific races I noticed:

- The Dem governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, won re-election. This is somewhat surprising given that Kentucky is a deep red state (Trump polls at +26 there). Beshear ran openly on his support for abortion rights.

- The abortion issue seemed to be important in the election overall, with Dems and women and pro-choice folks turning out in numbers to vote for bills and candidates who supported abortion.

- Ohio voted to enshrine the right to abortion in their state constitution, even as Republicans won most of the local offices there.

- A Dem won a seat on Pennsylvania's state supreme court, keeping a 5-2 advantage for liberal justices there, in a state likely to be a battleground in the 2024 election.

- Dems lost the Mississippi governor's race, as Brandon Presley (related to Elvis Presley) lost to Republican Gov. Tate Reeves. That's expected in deep-red Mississippi, but Dems were hyped about Presley and thought he had a shot.

Any other interesting races I missed? Thoughts on how the Republicans and Democrats did as a whole?

Danica Roem, the first trans woman to hold a state delegate's office, has won an election to become a Virginia state senator.

Dems seemed to win by running on the issues.

Their war on abortion has completely backfired on them. The new Supreme Court recruits said they wouldn’t touch abortion when they were being confirmed. The Honorable Supreme Court justices were lying. Not a good look for our most distinguished and honorable Americans. The majority of Americans support abortion rights. The Supreme Court tried to take it away. The people of America have spoken very loudly and voted to protect abortion rights in every single state it came to vote in.

Now Republicans have realized they have blundered and are trying to stop the bleeding. I’m sure they will keep their militant version for their base before they soften their stance for the general election.
