The new USS Ford is the first serious upgrade in Aircraft Carriers in many decades.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Gerald_R._Ford
Gerald R. Ford is intended to be the first of a class of aircraft carriers that offer significant performance improvements over the previous Nimitz class. Gerald R. Ford is equipped with an AN/SPY-3 and AN/SPY-4 active electronically scanned array multi-function radar,[50] and an island that is shorter in length and 20 feet (6.1 m) taller than that of the Nimitz class; it is set 140 feet (43 m) further aft and 3 feet (0.91 m) closer to the edge of the ship. Replacing traditional steam catapults, the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) will launch all carrier aircraft. This innovation eliminates the traditional requirement to generate and store steam, freeing up considerable area below-deck. With the EMALS, Gerald R. Ford can accomplish 25% more aircraft launches per day than the Nimitz class and requires 25% fewer crew members. The Navy estimates it will save $4 billion in operating costs over a 50-year lifespan.[51] According to an Associated Press story:

“ ‘She is truly a technological marvel,' Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert said in a webcast ceremony at the Newport News, Va., shipyard where Gerald R. Ford is being built, 'She will carry unmanned aircraft, joint strike fighters, and she will deploy lasers.’[52] ”
These performance enhancements were problematic in Pentagon tests, but final software fixes for some of the problems were delayed until after the ship’s post-shakedown availability in 2019

It comes with laser gun that can knock out boats and aircraft.
It comes with a new rail gun powered by electricity.
The steam catapult has been replaced by an electromagnetic one instead.
It holds 25% more planes and can launch them faster.
They moved the tower back and made it smaller creating more space.

All the Nuclear Missile Submarines in the World in One Chart
Only seven countries in the entire world deploy nuclear weapons at sea, an exclusive and deadly club.
https://www.popularmechanics.com/milita ... nes-chart/

The United States Navy currently operates the biggest fleet of ballistic missile subs, consisting of 14 18,800-ton Ohio class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). France and the United Kingdom operate four SSBNs each, with France's belonging to the 14,300-ton Triomphant class and the United Kingdom's the 15,900-ton Vanguard class. All American, French, and British boats are nuclear-powered and are the largest submarines ever built by each country.

This Tank-Killer Robot Could Revolutionize Ground Warfare
Will the battlefield of the future be robots fighting robots?
https://www.popularmechanics.com/milita ... ot-themis/
A new unmanned ground vehicle pairs a new and deadly anti-tank missile with a robotic platform. The result is a drone vehicle that can kill the most advanced tanks at ranges of up to three miles—and if it gets destroyed, you haven't lost any soldiers.

The combination of expendability with lethality forces the question: At what point will the battlefield simply become too lethal for humans

Japan’s Ships May Carry Fighter Jets, But Don’t Call Them Carriers
https://www.popularmechanics.com/milita ... -carriers/
The Japanese government is considering a bold plan: converting its largest ships to carry the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in order to shore up a key defense vulnerability. The country’s use of aircraft carriers during World War II, however, has made loathe to actually use the phrase “aircraft carrier,” instead preferring the term “multi-purpose operational mother ship”.

In the early years of World War II, Japan had the largest and most power aircraft carrier fleet in the world. An island nation bereft of natural resources, Japan needed to procure them abroad, making a powerful navy vitally important. Japan’s carrier force swept across the Pacific, bombing China, attacking Australia, and infamously the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor.

In the aftermath of the war Japan became a pacifist country, swearing off war as a tool of national policy. It banned entire categories of offensive forces and weapons, including bombers, marines, and aircraft carriers. Now, after a 73 year absence, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party is looking to bring back aircraft carriers to help protect Japanese airspace in areas where Japan and China have territorial disputes.

China's navy is getting bigger and better and doing it at a speed unmatched by any nation around the globe.
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/07/13/asia ... index.html

Earlier this month, the People's Liberation Army Navy launched two 13,000-ton Type 055 guided-missile destroyers -- Asia's largest, most sophisticated and most lethal combat ships.
"This ship in particular has a sophisticated design, stealth features, radars, and a large missile inventory. It is larger and more powerful than most US, Japanese, and South Korean destroyers," said Rand Corp. senior analyst Timothy Heath.

Back in China, the July 3 double launch made big statements about what the US and its Asian allies, and indeed the world, can expect from Beijing in the future.

Russia shows off new weapons after Trump summit
https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/20/europe/r ... deos-intl/

(CNN)As European leaders grappled with the fallout from the Donald Trump-Vladimir Putin summit Thursday, Russian authorities took the opportunity to show off some of the new weaponry Putin boasted in March would render NATO defenses "completely useless."

In videos posted on YouTube and in stories on the Russian state-run TASS news agency, Moscow gave new detailed looks at five advanced weapon systems -- the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile; the Avangard hypersonic missile system; the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM); the Poseidon underwater drone; and the Kinzhal hypersonic missile.

What Russia’s Vostok-2018 exercises mean for China and the West
https://thehill.com/opinion/national-se ... d-the-west
Russia’s massive Vostok-2018 drills were two things at once. They were a military drill where troops tested their combat preparedness. But they also were a diplomatic exercise highlighting relations with China and aimed at the West.

In a twist, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army participated for the first time. The exercise therefore offers serious lessons as to Russia’s diplomatic footing towards both China and the West.

According to Russian media, Vostok-2018 enshrined the creation an ‘anti-American military alliance’. To drive the point home, the beginning of the active phase of the exercise coincided with a meeting between presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping at the margins of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

The signal intended for the US and the West is quite clear: in times of tension between Russia and the West, Moscow is not militarily isolated and can count on China as an ally. Meanwhile, NATO and the US cannot do military drills bigger and better than this year’s Vostok.

This does not mean that Russia is preparing for war against the West. It is more an element of show, chest thumping for both foreign and domestic audiences. But despite this, and the limits on the evolving Russia–China relationship, Vostok-2018 has left plenty for the West to keep an eye on.

It might therefore be time for a new Western reality check around the evolving nature of the Russia-China relationship.

Hypersonic Missiles Are Unstoppable. And They’re Starting a New Global Arms Race.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/hy ... ar-AAD6ODh
Griffin was referring to a revolutionary new type of weapon, one that would have the unprecedented ability to maneuver and then to strike almost any target in the world within a matter of minutes. Capable of traveling at more than 15 times the speed of sound, hypersonic missiles arrive at their targets in a blinding, destructive flash, before any sonic booms or other meaningful warning. So far, there are no surefire defenses. Fast, effective, precise and unstoppable — these are rare but highly desired characteristics on the modern battlefield. And the missiles are being developed not only by the United States but also by China, Russia and other countries.

Coming Soon: Stealth U.S. Air Force F-35s Armed with Laser Weapons?
https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/ ... pons-51957
The service anticipates having aircraft and fighter jet-fired lasers in operation as soon as the early 2020s, as mobile power systems and other integral technologies continue to evolve rapidly.

Given the advent of laser weapons, fighter pilots are preparing for new tactical possibilities, such as an ability to attack multiple targets at once and rapidly retarget, Air Force Research Laboratory papers explain. While current fighters, such as the F-35, are able to launch simultaneous air-to-air attacks on enemy targets such as planes and drones, pilots preparing to fire lasers will have an even greater ability to engage multiple targets concurrently. This, among other things, will enable fighter jets to engage in close-combat in higher risk scenarios where they might encounter multiple enemy aircraft.
