Suns News: Offseason
Re: Suns News: Offseason
They want to unload over 80M in salary and not bring anything back past this year? So only guys on 1 year deals? Good luck with that.
Re: Suns News: Offseason
I don't believe Chris Paul would have been required for the Suns to go to the playoffs this past season. The team was an Ayton drug test away from already making the jump. I don't think he is required to go this upcoming season--the Suns have cap room, good chemistry in the locker room, and momentum.
Bringing Paul in would certainly handicap the team's ability to retain their current bench or bring in new guys that aren't already title chasers/old vets. Secondly, locker-room issues follow Paul like Kendall Jenner follows Booker. Finally, Chris Paul has only stayed on his last 2 teams for 2 years, and his family is in LA-- I see no reason to think that Paul would stay here after his massive contract expires in 2 years, requiring another large change in the roster then as well.

I think only the Knicks and Atlanta could pull something like that off.

$40 million dollars for a 36 year old PG that gives you a slight uptick from Rubio production, minus, from what everyone seems to claim, leadership and a bit of a locker room problem? I just don't get it. Sure, I don't want most of our bench back either. But you cripple your ability to get much of anything, current bench or other bench players of significance, with $40 million on your payroll for a 36 year old PG.specialsauce wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 2:22 pmWho cares? If folks couldn't tell, I'm not in favor of CP3 for $40 million a year. He's not THAT significant of an upgrade from Rubio. If Ayton hadn't been suspended, we wouldn't be talking about missing the playoffs barely last season and continuing our success next season towards an even better playoff run with a few pieces here and there.

I’m on board with you with respect to CP3 at $40M- I was just surprised an argument is because we’d lose Dario Saric and Frank Kaminsky.AmareIsGod wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 2:28 pm$40 million dollars for a 36 year old PG that gives you a slight uptick from Rubio production, minus, from what everyone seems to claim, leadership and a bit of a locker room problem? I’d much rather throw $20-25M at FVV or trade for Holiday.
Re: Suns News: Offseason
So, you could agree in principle on the parameters of the trade before the draft and FA. That way, you could get the FA that you were targeting and it doesn't change anything else. I'm all for spending Sarver's money, and it's only for 2 yrs. You could create a lot of space in 2022 when he comes off the books and before Ayton and Bridges sign their extension. So you could get the big FA, keep Saric & Carter, keep the rookie and then make the trade.AmareIsGod wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 2:28 pm$40 million dollars for a 36 year old PG that gives you a slight uptick from Rubio production, minus, from what everyone seems to claim, leadership and a bit of a locker room problem? I think he makes way too much, but it isn't fair to say a slight uptick. He was 10th in the league in VORP (I know you can argue for/against any advanced stat...).AmareIsGod wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 2:28 pm$40 million dollars for a 36 year old PG that gives you a slight uptick from Rubio production, minus, from what everyone seems to claim, leadership and a bit of a locker room problem? Better than nearly everyone. The only guys that did more were guys like Harden, Giannis, Lebron, Kawhi, Dame, Jokic, AD, Luka and Butler.
Rubio was 76th.
I don't expect him to be 10th in the league again, but he got OKC to the playoffs when most people were picking them to fall off a cliff.

If we are playing hypotheticals, I would argue we still wouldn't have made the playoffs even with those 25 games if COVID didn't suspend the season. Our play in the bubble was nothing like our play outside of it.AmareIsGod wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 2:28 pm$40 million dollars for a 36 year old PG that gives you a slight uptick from Rubio production, minus, from what everyone seems to claim, leadership and a bit of a locker room problem? Re: Suns News: Offseason
I liked the job Saric did. I liked Baynes as well. Without the trade, our Bench would also include either Johnson or Oubre. We would also have the money to pursue FVV or Wood. Its possible we could still pick up a decent role player if the trade doesnt happen until after the FA period, but I would be going off the assumption that it is not.specialsauce wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 2:41 pmI’m on board with you with respect to CP3 at $40M- I was just surprised an argument is because we’d lose Dario Saric and Frank Kaminsky.AmareIsGod wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 2:28 pm$40 million dollars for a 36 year old PG that gives you a slight uptick from Rubio production, minus, from what everyone seems to claim, leadership and a bit of a locker room problem? Good point. I wasn't aware of the VPOR rating or whatever either. I'm not heavy in advanced stats. Didn't realize CP3 had such a great season last year.Indy wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 2:51 pmIf we are playing hypotheticals, I would argue we still wouldn't have made the playoffs even with those 25 games if COVID didn't suspend the season. Re: Suns News: Offseason
CP3 is a lot better than Rubio, but our starting unit was already pretty good. Our bench was terrible. If they bring in Paul, I hope they do it in a way that still strengthens the bench.
I still think it's a long shot.

Re: Suns News: Offseason
Same. Based on how last year finished, we know our 3 wings were pretty good for us, and covered a lot of holes. If we lose one, and even replace him with an equal through some luck of a great MLE signing, we aren't that much better. We need another legit backup if we want to be on pace with those in the "guaranteed" playoff teams. Especially with GSW back in that group.
Re: Suns News: Offseason
It is the Value Over Replacement Player (basically the advanced stat that tries to measure how much better a player is compared to a replacement player and averaged over 100 possessions).AmareIsGod wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 3:04 pmGood point. Re: Suns News: Offseason
I still think we're underrating Carter and Cam Payne a bit. In tandem they could give us the backup guard play at either spot. Carter's still only going into his 3rd year so it's reasonable to think he's still progressing and things seem to have clicked with Payne since being out of the league and maybe maturing a bit. There are plenty of veteran guards/wings we can bring in just the same. I'm more concerned with the frontcourt if we lose Baynes and Dario.
