Coronavirus
Re: Coronavirus
We haven't really talked much on here about Biden's COVID vaccine mandates. What do you folks think? Was it the right thing to do? Will it get struck down in court?
Re: Coronavirus
I don't see it as anything different than requiring MMR shots for soldiers and students and employees that has already been in place for a long, long time.
Jacobson is the big SCOTUS case regarding this and it was over 100 years ago and hasn't been chipped away at since (unlike many others). So I would think it would survive.
Re: Coronavirus
I am in favor of the mandates.

Re: Coronavirus
It is so depressing that vaccine mandates are even necessary. What is wrong with us?

Re: Coronavirus
It predates Republicans. There was an Anti-Vaccination League fighting against mandatory small pox vaccines in the 19th century.
Re: Coronavirus
Yeah but it was (rightly) considered a fringe group of idiots; it wasn't 1/3 to 1/2 of the country falling for it. And it didn't have the country's #1 cable TV network constantly fearmongering about vaccines out of a cynical effort to hurt the approval rating of the enemy party's President.
Re: Coronavirus
By the way, we are back up over 2000 dead Americans from COVID every day. Every day. At a time when there is a vaccine for the disease, which is freely available, as in $0, and you can get it at any random pharmacy with no wait. 2000 dead a day. So every day and a half we've got as many dead as 9/11. Every 3 minutes as many people die from COVID as died in Benghazi, which we did 11 investigations about, but whatever.

You Republicans really do hate Mueller don’t you? Is it because he stood up to Trump?

You think my post was about Mueller?

Re: Coronavirus
What does Asimov's son's extreme perversity have to do with Asimov's quote?
Just a fun fact?

Yep, just an interesting thing I heard about him this weekend, and when Laz posted his quote, I thought I would share. It only pertains to Isaac's post as Isaac was very famous, and David was his son. Mueller doesn't sound like a great guy though.

It’s pretty sad and horrible, I’ll give you that. Not only does he have a child pornography collection, but it’s the largest in California history!!!

Re: Coronavirus
I'm trying to fact-check this story. I did find some sites talking about Asimov's son being arrested on child porn charges. Here's one from SFGate from 1998:
https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/ ... 099867.php
Apparently they seized his computer and hard drives to look through them for offending material. The article says that he might not face prison time because the prosecution may not have had any evidence of intent to sell or distribute child pornography. The article says that mere possession of such materials is only a misdemeanor that only merits a fine. It sounds like Asimov received in-home confinement and a fine and other minor penalties for his behavior.
I'm no defender of child porn by any stretch. But I am a defender of innocent until proven guilty. I don't know what wrongdoing Mueller supposedly committed here; if they had evidence that merited further charges, presumably they would have presented it and prosecuted Asimov? Do we have any clear indicator that Mueller or another prosecutor was derelict in their duties in this case?

Re: Coronavirus
Yes, I do.
I will say I had a neighbor down the street who was busted by the FBI for child porn on his computer and he did serve years in prison.

Re: Coronavirus
Is that the only thing you found on the story? Here are some of things I found, including not a great profile of Isaac.

I know this one has more to it than just child porn, but he got a life sentence recently.

I promise you it wasn't at all, but it was definitely a surprise bonus.
