Around the League News - 2022 Offseason Edition
Re: Around the League News - 2022 Offseason Edition
I’m sure they’d drop the games down from 82 if they added a mid season tournament
Re: Around the League News - 2022 Offseason Edition
I'd imagine they'd cut the number of regular season games down and replace those with the tourney games. 65 game regular season or something and then however many tourney games packaged up as a separate entity.
Re: Around the League News - 2022 Offseason Edition
But this would take away from the importance of the playoffs. Our first ever championship wouldn’t mean as much. Which one proves which team is the best in the league? How do you prove you’re the best unless you win both trophies?

I don’t really think that’s true. Everyone is still going to view the finals as the real championship. I think you could see a scenario where winning both makes for an even more impressive season. Not taking away, but potentially adding to a championship.JeremyG wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 8:29 amBut this would take away from the importance of the playoffs. Wouldn’t it be nice if the suns had won the mid season tournament this year? Instead of feeling completely like crap after an awesome regular season that flamed out in the playoffs, we could at least feel good about something. And I don’t think the Warriors would feel any less special about their finals win if we had won the mid-season tournament.

I would also be fine with shortening the earlier playoff rounds (although money talks, so this will never happen) -Split T wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 8:40 amI don’t really think that’s true. Opening Round - best of three
Semifinal Round - best of five
Conference Championships & Finals - best of seven
I get a little playoff fatigue and really don't think we need a best of seven for #1 vs #8

Re: Around the League News - 2022 Offseason Edition
It does make upsets more likely which is part of the reason I think they like to keep best of 7. Maybe the advantage is the higher seed only needs to win 3, lower seed still needs 4? That might get a little funky.
Re: Around the League News - 2022 Offseason Edition
Or do a first round bye for the top 4 seeds in each conference so the league isn't as worried about losing a top team in the first round. Then do a best of three. Or let everyone in (after you expand to Seattle and Vegas) so that 5v16, 6v15, 7v14, 8v13, 9v12, 10v11 is the "qualifying round" or play in or whatever you want to call it. You can even make it lower seed has to win 2, higher seed only 1 to move on.

Re: Around the League News - 2022 Offseason Edition
I get your feelings, if the NBA is trying to emulate the soccer’s Cup Tournaments, it will be a Round-Robin elimination bracket on single games, but that would not make enough games to offset a big reduction from the 82 games calendar, as the champion would only play 5 games to win it all. If they start it with a group seeding -perhaps using the divisional seeding- like the Soccer World Cup, then every team could play more, but how different it would be from regular season except for being an express tournament?JeremyG wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 8:29 amBut this would take away from the importance of the playoffs. And about who’s the real champion, I’m pretty sure eventually they will make a game facing the Cup and Regular Champions. More revenue.
I don’t like it either.

What is the incentive to win the in-season tournament? To try hard?

Gotta get something better than those Summer League championship rings!

This in game tournament is stupid.
Re: Around the League News - 2022 Offseason Edition
WORD. A tournament, in the middle of a game? Lunacy! What would they do, host it between the 2nd and 3rd quarters?!

I wonder if this is a moment for us. If NY sends Utah a bunch of picks for Mitchell, maybe a couple of those picks could reroute to us for Ayton?

Re: Around the League News - 2022 Offseason Edition
Here’s what I’m thinking:
Utah recieves Ayton, Reddish, Quickley and 3 1sts
Knicks receive Mitchell and Azibuike
Suns recieve Fournier and 2 1sts.
We then package Cam J, Crowder, Saric, and Shamet with 6 1sts for KD.
Other options to make the salaries work would be Mikal, Saric, and Craig. Fournier, Crowder, and Saric. There’s a few ways to do it. I imagine they’d still want Mikal, but maybe being able to send them 6 1sts is enough?
Fournier could also be a decent option for us off the bench as a 3rd guard if we don’t include him…which I don’t think he’d be all that appealing to Brooklyn.
