Basketball Movies/Shows
Here we are in the dog days of the offseason, so I thought I would make some recommendations based on some basketball stuff I have watched lately. These are pretty good content that let us get to know some of the younger players and current stars:
Destination NBA: A G League Odyssey(Movie) - Amazon Prime Video - Features Scoot Henderson and other G-Leaguers
Basketball County: In The Water(Documentary) - Amazon Prime Video - About Prince George County in Maryland that has produced countless NBA/WNBA players including Kevin Durant
One Shot: Overtime Elite(Series - 6 episodes) - Amazon Prime Video - Features the Thompson twins(#4 & 5 picks in the 2023 NBA draft) and other promising young prospects
JxmyHighroller - In my opinion the best NBA YouTuber
Champions(Movie) - Amazon Prime Video - Just a feel good basketball movie with Woody Harrelson
Please add to this list and make recommendations so we can watch more basketball during the offseason.

Nice. I’ll check some of this out when I get a chance. Not familiar with any of it. I still remember watching the Robbie Benson basketball movie, One on One, as a kid. Of course there’s Hoosiers and White Men Can’t Jump. Glory Road is excellent. What other basketball movies do you all like?SunsRIt wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 12:54 amHere we are in the dog days of the offseason, so I thought I would make some recommendations based on some basketball stuff I have watched lately. Re: Basketball Movies/Shows
There's a Stephon Marbury documentary called The Kid from Coney Island on Amazon prime that I thought was pretty good.
More broadly, there's a documentary on Showtime called NYC Point Gods that I thought was really, really, great.

A lot of you have probably seen Hustle, but it’s good. Adam Sandler movie where he is an nba scout and finds an unknown talent. Lots of nba player cameos.

Cool, will check them out.wpmiller42 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 5:38 amThere's a Stephon Marbury documentary called The Kid from Coney Island on Amazon prime that I thought was pretty good.

No thunderstruck?! Totally forgot about KD in that till I saw that video that was shared when the team was all leaving the gym.
Re: Basketball Movies/Shows
Yes, did see this one. Speaking of Sandler and cameos, I saw a top 25 basketball movie list that included Uncut Gems which it insisted was a basketball movie. I can’t say I agree but Kevin Garnett makes an appearance.

Re: Basketball Movies/Shows
Ya, more a movie about a gem dealer featuring basketball players vs a movie about basketball.
Re: Basketball Movies/Shows
I’d say it’s a movie about gambling vs basketball. Sure, he’s gambling on basketball but that is still just gambling.Kryptonic wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 11:55 amYa, more a movie about a gem dealer featuring basketball players vs a movie about basketball.

Re: Basketball Movies/Shows
My all time favorite is Forget Paris. Not really a basketball movie, but has some great nba player cameos in it.
Re: Basketball Movies/Shows
Winning Time just got cancelled after 2 seasons. Seemed like it was too niche to find a general audience. I kind of had a feeling it wouldn't do so well with all the press kits they were sending out when it was premiering and just 2-3 weeks ago its author Jeff Pearlman was on social begging people to watch. Guess there aren't enough basketball/Lakers fans out there. The irony is
Spoiler: show/hide
Re: Basketball Movies/Shows
I'll probably start watching today. Will be laying around anyway for the next few days.

Re: Basketball Movies/Shows
I found it very educational in a historical sense and entertaining as a show. I wasn’t watching it because I was a fan of the Lakers. My second favorite team is whomever is playing the Lakers. I wasn’t worried about being converted to being a Laker fan just because I watched. Seeing how Buss bought the team and mortgaged everything he had and then some trying to win was interesting.
Seeing the story of Pat Riley was intriguing. He played for the Lakers and then afterwards was just looking for any job to keep going. He started out as the guy who filmed practices. He moved onto doing some announcing. After their coach had his accident Riley managed to finagle his way into being an assistant coach and the other assistant coach became head coach. After that coach was fired Riley became the interim head coach until they could find a replacement. Riley did well enough that he became the regular head coach and the rest is history.
Edit: Riley was named NBA Coach of the Year for the first time in 1989–90, but stepped down as Lakers head coach after they lost to the Phoenix Suns in the playoffs. I was living in L.A. at the time and had a rivalry with a total Lakers fan living in the apartment next to me. He guaranteed the Lakers would crush the Suns. When the Suns knocked the Lakers out of the playoffs I left him a poster on his door that said “Suns Win!”. I waited for him to come home from work and heard him walk up the stairs and then I heard a loud “Fuck You!”. Fun times.
