The dems have a real problem on their hands…. Do you put the theoretical next in line on the ticket or the guy who will better connect with voters? Then if you put Newsome on the ticket, how do rationalize dumping Kamala without looking like jerks?

Honestly, I haven't been at all impressed with Kamala as VP. I don't think she gets us any closer than Biden to a Democratic win.
VPs never impress.

A VP’s job is to stay alive in case the President dies. That’s about it. They don’t usually impress because they really don’t do anything. I haven’t been a real fan of hers based solely on my view of her personality. Biden is the tame old man. Kamala is more of a pit bull prosecutor. She checks a lot of boxes. She would be the first black, first Indian, first female President in US history. Trump is a serial lying sexual predator who doesn’t seem to be a fan of minorities. She represents the America he doesn’t like. It would be an abrupt change in strategy. Trump wouldn’t be able to help himself and would talk about her menstrual periods and insult the crap out of her. The big mean rich white guy attacking the minority woman. Will she roll over. I don’t think so. She was the top prosecutor in California. I think she is ready to fight.

I really don't think Newsom has any chance of being the 2024 nominee. If Biden steps aside and lets Kamala run, she inherits his substantial war chest of funding, somewhere in the tens of millions of dollars. If another person becomes the nominee, they start with $0 raised, an enormous disadvantage for hiring, running ads, and generally running a campaign. Also, if the party is perceived to have "passed over" Kamala, particularly passing over the black/brown woman for a white male, voters of color and women will be outraged.

I also don't think it is a given that Newsom will "better connect with voters." He might, but it just hasn't been tested. Newsom seems like a promising candidate in the future, but every time a Dem actually gets ready to run, the media and the GOP and the population as a whole start to pick the person apart, dig up all the skeletons in their closet, analyze all their real and perceived flaws. When that comes for Newsom, he might become just as unpopular or more unpopular than other candidates like Biden and Kamala. I do think Newsom has some strengths, but I'm just saying that we don't know until he's actually thrown into the fire.

One thing I think some folks are underestimating is, everybody who voted for Biden in 2020 and everybody who voted for him on the primary in 2024, was also voting for Kamala (as his VP). She's part of his administration and part of his ticket. Raising her to the nominee is just a pivot, an extension of that same ticket. Picking some other person like Newsom or Whitmer or whomever isn't that. I think the two realistic options for the Dems in 2024 are: keep Biden, or switch to Kamala. I am on record at this point as preferring the latter, but that's basically where we are now.

I think one basically equals the other when it comes to end result. I don't see another 4 healthy years out of Biden - and Harris would replace him at some point.

And I'd still vote for him over Trump even if he was in a coma.

So far, Biden is starting the week saying in no uncertain terms that he is staying in the race. He sent the letter below to Congressional Dems saying as much, and he called in to the Morning Joe show to say the same.

Jon Stewart weighs in on the Biden age controversy. Good stuff; his weekly shows have been really enjoyable.

It was reported that a Parkinson's disease expert visited the White House several times recently. This led some people to worry that Biden has Parkinson's; so the White House has released a letter denying that with words from the doctor. This sort of thing is going to continue all the way up to the election. Every time Biden sneezes or looks weird or says something wrong, the story will be about his age. He needs to go.

This whole controversy and speculation on what Congressional Democrats are going to do is ridiculous. The top Democrats don’t have to decide whether to support Biden or tell him to drop out. They should just announce that they will withdraw their support unless he undergoes detailed cognitive testing and is cleared! Force him to actually get tested, so we actually know the facts on his current condition at least.

DO vs MD is essentially semantics nowadays, like DDS vs DMD for dentists. They may go to different medical schools, but the vast majority of residencies take both DO and MD candidates. I wouldn't discount someone based on that.

My neurologist on staff is willing to bet his house that Biden has a neurodegenerative disease (Parkinson's). There's no doubt in my mind he has it as well. Masked facies, soft voice, shuffling gait. There's not a chance he doesn't deteriorate significantly in the next four years in office.

My dad had Parkinson’s. I have seen what you describe first hand. How could the Democratic Party allow him to run if this is in fact true?

I just don't see the argument that Biden will be fit to serve over four years from now, much less four months from now. Even if his little gaffes and blips are just minor now, haven't we seen enough to be certain that he couldn't possibly serve another four-year term and be cogent for its entirety?
