Cap's DC movie ideas

Post by Cap »

Mori actually asked me to post this, so blame him.

A lot of these movie ideas are pretty bare bones, but I'll post what I have.

The first movie: The Last Days of Krypton

It's an overt climate change parable:
Scientists discover their world's primary energy technology is threatening the planet. At first political powers don't listen to them, but eventually an international agreement comes together. However, a few nations are recalcitrant and refuse to give up the technology.

Zod is the head of the military of the planet's sole superpower. He believes the world needs a global power capable of enforcing a ban on the technology. When the political powers don't go along with him, he stages a coup and starts a war. He expects a quick victory, but the war drags on, increasing the demand for energy and accelerating the problem.

People start to talk about evacuating to save as many of their people and as much of their culture as possible. Zod won't allow it, insisting that everybody stay and be part of the solution or die with everybody else. Jor-El and Lara manage to sneak their newborn son off the planet just as it explodes.
Time between the movies to digest and react is part of the experience, so I'll stop here for now. I'll wait for a request (dare I hope for two?) before posting the next one. I also hope to read your thoughts on how you would like such a movie, how you think others might react, and what you might contribute to it.

Nice…. Have you heard about the “absolutely” universe? Redoing all of the origins stories and from the highlights I’ve seen it’s very different.

Never heard of it, but you have me curious.

ETA: Rather than "Absolutely" I suspect you mean Absolute Universe.

Definitely not intended to be the same continuity as the mainline comics. I'm going to reimagine quite a bit.

I apologize.., you’re absolutely correct. It’s Absolute. In this universe Bruce Wayne isn’t rich, kal el and his parents all make the trek to earth, and the flash is Wally west (I mean we already knew that here) and Barry Allen doesn’t exist.

Some character notes:
  • Jor-El is a scientist. He’s the one who discovers that Earth would be the perfect destination for Kal-El. He is also the leading advocate/educator on the danger of the standard energy tech and the need to switch to green tech.

  • Lara is an engineer, high up in Zod’s military, and knows more about the military tech than anyone. When Zod establishes a shield around the planet to prevent anyone from leaving, she finds a vulnerability that will allow them to get Kal-El through as the planet dies.
This may be significant later. Or maybe I just like it.

I'm always game for a well written origin story. Keep going.

Sorry, Charlie.

The Last Days of Krypton (continued)

When the movie comes out on home video, there is also an Extended Edition with material not seen in theaters. The Theatrical and Extended editions are sold separately for less than the average movie and together for a good value. For example, if comparable movies sell for $29.99, the two versions would be sold separately for $24.99 and together for $38.98.
► Show Spoiler
Be noncommittal on whether the additional material is canonical. Future films should have content that some will use to argue that the Extended version is not canonical while others can explain the apparent inconsistencies. Ditto the other way.

To be continued...

I'm not familiar with that book. Is it like my Extended Edition or more like the story implied by the theatrical edition?

No…, not that I recall. Been a hot minute since I’ve read it and read a lot of other Superman stories that sometimes tend to blend together in my brain.

Just reacting to the title?

Maybe I need another title. Crisis on Krypton. Dekryption. Apokrypton. Kryptongeddon. KryptonDämmerung. The End of Krypton as we Know It. Climb at Change. Zod Almighty. Kaboom! Downfall.

You do need a new one as yours is already published.
Synchronicity and all that jazz, man.

The Green Flame of Krypton's Red Ruin. (Credit ChatGPT with that one.)

Come on, let's hear some! Don't be afraid to be ridiculous and stupid, I've set the precedent.

I'm trying to conduct a cinematic experiment with different versions for different audiences. This isn't the Politics folder so let's avoid discussing the merits of the issues, but discuss how politically-oriented audiences might react to the movies.

The hope is that when the movie first comes out, reviewers on the left will praise the climate change parable and the ecological message, while anti-woke commentators rail against every aspect of the film in every way they can think of in YouTube reviews longer than the movie, and anti-anti-woke commentators tell them, "Get a life, it's a movie, if you don't like it don't watch it." You may have seen this scenario play out before.

Then a "The Rest of the Story" version comes out reflecting a more patriotic worldview. We get to see who on the left has a sense of humor and who mimics the ragers they were just mocking. People can make a statement by which version(s) they buy.

My story does seem to have some superficial similarities to Anderson's. Studio might want to throw a few bucks his way to ward off potential challenges, or the movie can adapt aspects of the novel if it's good.

A story with a multiverse approach to story telling…. I kind of feel we’re going to be heading that way with entertainment and A.I. Probably 5 years away I bet.
