I don’t hate Jalen Green but do think he just is what he is as a player - I can’t see a path to him getting significantly better in the areas we most need him to (playmaking and defense). His FG% last season is right on his career average and he has been remarkably consistent season by season - between 41.6 and 42.6 each year. Could he make a big efficiency jump in year 6? It’s possible but certainly not likely.
He’s not going to be a plus defender or playmaker so we need to ask is scoring worth it for this team? As a young player some in the league may still see significant upside in, we’d be silly not to see what offers might be out there.

As for Book, I think he’s worth more to us than other teams, and certainly more than we’d get back in a trade. It’s worth something to have someone that other star players respect and seem keen to play with - even though the $s of his contract is a concern going forward. The point about Brown’s return is well made, although Brown rightly or wrongly had a rep as a bad teammate/ high maintenance player which is certainly not the case with Book.
100% agree with all of this.

Also think it is easier to develop solid role players with a vet like Book who has gravity and plays within the offense.

There seems to be a lot of posters on here who think Green has very little trade value. Is that because he's coming off an injury, or is that about his play last season?

IMO, he has more trade value than he has value for us. I just don't think he contributes to wins for us, because we don't much need the positives he brings. But I think there are a few teams around the league that could use a scoring 2 guard, and I hope the FO has an eye on what those teams might offer.

I also don't think we need an established star. There are many ways to improve the team. Better fit, youth with upside, draft capital, cap flexibility, etc.

Green already had questionable value to us, but now that we have acquired a score-first starting PF in The Abuser, we have even less need for Green. I don't know what exactly his trade value is right now, but IMO his value will drop if we keep him here this coming season, because there will be too many guys wanting the ball and wanting to score on the team which will cause some guys' numbers to drop.

If you can get a pick and one prospect or better-fit player (such as a starting PG) for Green I think you have to very seriously consider it.

I know that we are just all keyboard warriors who can’t affect how the team actually approaches transactions, but say that we could dictate trades. I’m perfectly fine trading Green for a first and a prospect (since Green himself is just 24 and has an actual skill). For a PG, sure. But if it’s a late second and a nominal PG who is 10 years older then I’m not so interested.

For all those who can’t wait to get rid of him, can you come up with some actual target players? Ones that earn a similar salary that is even remotely available via trade? I know Split had a list and from that I think Garland / Giddey made some sense but for me these two don’t make enough of a difference for me to want to put up one or (his forbid) both of our available firsts. Any other actual targets?

I would still do both 1sts for Garland.

I would do Green for DeJounte, but I wouldn’t include 1sts.

I would also do Green for Jrue…but again I wouldn’t include 1sts.

I would do Green for Herro and would include a 1st, but not both.

Indy wouldn’t do it, but I’d include both 1sts for Nembhard and a contract(probably Toppin).

Giddey I’d include a 1st for.

I’d give up both 1sts for Derrick White, but Boston won’t do that.

I don’t think I’d do Quickley for Green unless Toronto paid us. Maybe I’d do RJ Barrett for Green, but not including 1sts.

Green for Suggs is interesting, but with his health issues, I’m not including both 1sts, maybe 1.

A lot of these trades are interesting. I would do many of these, too, though in some cases without the 1st(s) being attached. Probably Nembhard is the most interesting; I think I would actually give up Green and a 1st for him. Probably not two 1sts.

Honestly, after looking at all the realistic options, holding onto Green might be the best move right now. The PG market is thin, and the only real upgrades are Dejounte Murray or Tyus Jones. Murray still has about $60M left on his deal compared to Green’s $25M, so if we took that on, we’d absolutely need a first coming back. Jones is reachable through a sign‑and‑trade, but that’s basically the only other real path.

Beyond those two, the rest of the names — Melton, Davion Mitchell, Jose Alvarado, Trey Jones — are role‑player types, not true “Book off‑ball” solutions. So unless a multi‑team deal opens up something unexpected, there just aren’t many great paths to a legit starting PG right now. Keeping Green might actually be the smartest play.

If you take in to account, Green’s next contract expectations Murray could actually save us cap space in the long run.

One of my favorite players on recent Suns teams and to me the second most important FA signing for us. A lot of my non suns basketball friends don’t understand my take but I’m sure this board does.

I would not do two firsts for Garland. I'd think about throwing in one 1st or maybe something cheaper, but I doubt the Clips would be interested.

For Dejounte, maybe straight up is a decent deal, though I don't know how the salaries match up. He's about 5 years older IIRC and I'd be on the fence about that one as Dejounte hasn't played defense in about 5 years.

For Jrue I'd need some assets back. He's got maybe 1.5 good years left. But Portland won't do that deal as they already have two small guards who can't play defense.

I wouldn't touch Herro, to be honest. Not even straight up.

I would love Nembhard, but yeah Indy wouldn't do it. I'd still be very queasy about giving up 2 firsts. I'd consider 1 first.

Giddey I'm maybe most okay giving up 1 first for, more so than Garland even. At least Giddey is bigger, even if neither plays defense.

I wouldn't give up both 1sts for White. The time to do that was when San Antonio was moving on from him. Right now, at 30 years old and 30% from 3, I'm not really willing to give up a first for him anymore, let alone 2. I do really still love his game, but if he continues to shoot like that he's just a rich man's Marcus Smart.

Quickley I actually still have a bit more faith in, but I think we had this exchange before, he's just not really a point guard. He and Green both are better suited to be 6th men so it's a bit of a wash. At least we know Green is a big plus on the team unity / chemistry department.

I kind of like the Orlando idea - if not for Suggs then for Black. I have a hard time seeing Orlando doing either.

Black would be great, but you’d need to take back money and I doubt Orlando would want to move him anyways.

Suggs is interesting but he’s just always hurt…very risky

Pickle, I’m curious about your take on Herro…to me I’d be pretty ecstatic if Green ended up as good as Herro…I’m assuming you must be a bit higher on Green’s ceiling…I’m pretty low on it and that’s probably obvious considering what I’d move green for vs what you and others would need to move him.

I think over the years looking at people’s general reactions to players / trades I’ve concluded that I’m higher on chemistry than most. I find Herro to be an average player who can score, and from that perspective he may be a bit better than Green. But I don’t see him as a point guard and I think his best role is also 6th man, not unlike Green. I know that BBIQ is a thing but if Green puts his mind to it he has a higher defensive ceiling than Herro, tho I am not holding my breath. But in terms of chemistry, Green is A+ and Herro is very low in my opinion. He’s always struck me as a bit of a dick and this latest punching incident with Bam doesn’t win him any points (I realize he’s on the receiving end of the punch and I’m maybe victim blaming a bit).

Both are interesting options but I just don’t see Orlando making either move. They need a playmaker maybe worse than we do.

Of all the decent point guards out there that might realistically be in play, I’d say Dejounte and Fox are the bigger names. Herro is on the block but I don’t think of him as a point guard and I also don’t want him. Quickley might be gettable for the right price but there’s no desperation there so they will likely take advantage of us and I don’t want to see that happen. If Ja rehabilitates his value this year does that make Scoot expendable? Could we somehow take a shot at a guy like Ty Jerome? Ultimately if these teams are not desperate to cleanse their rosters I see our front office overpaying for players. If Green were in a Beal / Bledsoe type situation I say just pull the trigger. But Green is beloved by his teammates and I’d rather just roll with him.

Scoot could be an option and might be realistic and gettable. Plus he's Klutch.

Obviously, you never know what teams actually think and we've seen enough stupid trades to know that it only takes one sucker to trade for a guy, but in terms of value, if you ask me, Green makes around 20M more than he should based on his ideal role for any team as a 6th man (let alone PHX with Booker, Brooks, etc.).

You can make the point that due to age and athleticism, he has untapped potential; but I don't think teams will buy it because the sample size is large enough at this point (and last season he even lost his status as an iron man). So my guess is that to the vast majority of teams, he is little more than a non-expiring bad contract and, as such, the only thing you are getting back in a trade is a similar bad contract, unless you are willing to give up actual assets.
