2nd Half of season

Discussion of the league and of our favorite team.

If you could choose how the rest of the season plays out, which would you pick?

Suns continue to lean on veterans(Bled, Tucker, Chandler) with no real change in rookies playing time, we finish 8th in West

Booker and Warren take a step forward and we see big improvements from Chriss/Bender, we finish 10th in West

We lean heavily on youngsters(Book, Warren, Chriss, Bender) vets are traded or benched, we finish last in West

I think 2nd round picks are almost worthless. I know the draft-heads will hate me for saying so, but we so rarely find any talent in the 2nd round, I just have almost no interest in that range of pick unless it is super early in the 2nd round. I'd probably rather just keep PJ Tucker than give him away for nothing but a 2nd round pick.

You mean keep him for 3 more months? Because he is a FA then. I agree that a single second rounder isn't what we would need (especially if it is a late one), but you have to think about what you get from him when he walks away.

Does he realize that would disqualify him from any more Dan Majerle Hustle Awards?

If you do your HW, a top 5-7 pick in the 2nd round can have a lot of value.

I'm giving McD time on this because he waited until the deadline to deal M****s and got a 1st. No point in making a deal now. A lot can change for teams in a month. Look at the Clippers with Chris Paul.

They could really use Bledsoe now.

There are usually 3 or 4 guys each year that make a career after being a 2ND round pick. Foreign players tend to have more success there. So you can find good players, but most likely they won't make it. Here's to Tyler ulis being an exception!

Anyone think we trade PJ then re-sign him in the off-season? I feel like thats totally a thing we'll do.

Sorry guys. We're going to re-sign him to a big contract and make him the face of the franchise. You can look forward to five more years in a row of him taking home the Majerle hustle award.

Nah. I'm out if we re-sign PJ. I never make proclamations like that but I'm not in for another 3 years of him blocking TJ or worse playing him with TJ & blocking Bender. Fuck that.

"Generally, I think we’re past the point where we’re looking for a volume of picks that aren’t very good or aren’t going to look like they’re very good," McDonough told the Burns and Gambo Show on Wednesday. "A second-round pick is not something we’d be excited about getting for one of our core players. We certainly put P.J. in that mix.

"Just to trade one of our core guys for a second-round pick -- given that we have all of our own picks going forward, given that we have those two Miami picks that are getting closer to conveying, potentially starting next year in the 2018 draft -- second-round picks, they don’t really move the needle a lot for us."
I like that it seems we aren't interested in 2nd round picks for Tucker, Knight, or Chandler
Tucker has also been a major factor in the development of many of the young players, especially Devin Booker, which is why McDonough will likely offer his forward a major contract in July. Tucker is making $5.3 million this season and might be able to triple that as a free agent.

"We have plenty of money available going forward. We don’t have another player like him on the roster. There’s certainly a chance we could re-sign him," McDonough said
If we sign Tucker to a 15 million per year deal....Wow, just wow. Stupidest thing we could ever do.

I bet on Tucker being traded by the deadline and the Suns getting a low 1stR out of it.

If he truly is re-signed to one of these stupid new cap contracts that role player like DeMarre are getting, I'll follow Carey on my way out.

I'd say you can't sign a guy that shoots 40% from the field and 30% from 3 to $15M a year no matter what kind of defense he plays, but Knight is making $14M/yr and is only shooting 40/35.

Feels like 15m is basically MLE now.

Heh. Certainly looks like that's the case, but the MLE is actually roughly 1/3 of that. Meanwhile Jon Leuer is making more than 10M per, Tolliver gets 8M per and Teletovic is also at 3/30.

I think there's a leap from re-signing PJ and him automatically blocking the others. There's the possibility that he comes back on a Barbosa/Dudley type arrangement, which I can live with.

I really don't mind getting multiple second rounders for a guy like Tucker. For Knight I'm hoping for at least a future first, as well as Chandler. As much as I want to move on from Bledsoe, I think his value is at least a lottery pick or multiple future firsts. But I don't know if GMs are stupid enough for this type of trade anymore.

As far as picks go, though, I want them to be actual future firsts, not ones that are coming up right away, because while I'm in for trading the first overall for a 3rd and a 6th, I'm not really on the side of getting more prospects, it's just that in this year's draft 3rd and 6th are very good picks. I don't want to see more Archie Goodwin situations where a guy gets stuck at the end of the bench and never gets a chance.

For Tucker, I'm gonna chalk that up to McDonough trying to buoy up his value. Alternatively if we gave him a Jeff Green deal, I can live with that too, as long as he's not getting the 35 mpg exposure again. Multiple years @ 15m would be absolute lunacy.

I have a sneaking suspicion that we'll just try to re-sign Tucker. This franchise doesn't really know how to rebuild, and they'll strike out on any real free agents. I think they'll trade Knight because even they can tell that he's hurting our team and doesn't fit. But I think they still love Tucker's toughness and his loyalty to the team and still cling to outdated memories of his former 3-point shooting and tough defense. They probably see him as a heady vet who is showing our young guys the right way to play, or something like that. Note that I disagree with all of that and would want to see him traded, but I'm trying to figure out their thought process on him.
