I understand what Monty is saying there, but it also scares me. You need the young talent to continually infuse your roster with new talent. It’s the cheapest way to do it. I guess we an continue to trade our picks for youngish, more established talent, but that’s going to be pricey. But it sounds like we shouldn’t expect to be drafting very many players over the next few years.

Or, hopefully, they can hit that sweet spot of finding the right college players who are old enough and experienced enough - or just flat out good enough - to contribute right away. Did it with Mikal and Cam. Missed on Stix but others were there who could've played right away. It's the younger "projects" who are always "2 years away" that we don't have much time for.

Yes, if they’re willing to try. Moved the pick this year before the draft.

In exchange for Shamet, an 24 yr old with 3 years experience whom Monty knew and had coached before in Philly and they felt could fit in and fill a need. Cost more, but less guaranteed years.

Ya I’m not against the move…but moves like this will always be available. It’ll be interesting to see if we keep making moves like this. It’s probably a better model for adding real rotation pieces, but I don’t know that it’s sustainable. It’ll get pricey and you’re also giving up the potential for hitting big on a rookie. Chances are the rookie won’t be great, especially at the end of the 1st, but there’s always guys in that range that turn into major pieces.

They are too good now to count on good draft picks

Not saying we need to count on them, but it can be a nice boost to snag a playable guy in the late 1st. Look at Desmond Bane who went 30 to Memphis the same year we took Jalen at 10. Would be not be more useful and cheaper than Landry right now?

The draft is that it is like a box of chocolates.

Yes that’s kinda my point. We are passing on the draft and the risk that comes with that for more certainty. But, that also means we are passing on the potential reward that can also come.

I was thinking about Bane. The other issue with not drafting is that when we want to make trades we have nothing that’s promising but pieces we don’t already depend on for our ongoing success that we can send out.

Of course if you're not picking cheap players in the draft you better hope you can pick up cheap players somewhere else for depth, like by signing players who are bought out.
So far the Suns haven't been a destination spot for players who have been bought out.
