No it’s not a continuation…. Which is why they recasted. Gunn wanted a new actor to start his DC comics universe.
But yet, not a reboot with origin story and all that, right?
Nope…. I like what Gunns gonna do with being a less concerned with continuity.

"None of it is real."

"You over there in the Spock ears, have you ever kissed a girl before?"

Honestly, I think this is a refreshing take. People take canon too far and criticize every little deviation. I mean, you don't have to do the opposite but I like the idea that the best storytelling wins out.

So, Youtube recently suggested some Breaking Bad clips to me. On a lark I watched a few of them. I was like, "Wow this show was so good." (I have already watched all of it some years ago.) The other day I was stuck at a doctor's office so I watched the first few episodes on my phone. Dang, I may just have to rewatch all of it now. I'm kind of already hooked again.

Then it got me thinking, isn't Breaking Bad one of my very favorite / best TV shows of all time? I was trying to think of shows that I have liked as much or better than Breaking Bad. I was looking for dramas, not comedy shows like Seinfeld or whatever. And I wouldn't generally include ones that were really short (e.g. a miniseries like Chernobyl, which was excellent but only 5 episodes), or ones that have barely gotten started (like Severance, which has had only 1 season). I can only think of a few that I clearly would put on or above Breaking Bad's level:

Game of Thrones
Succession
Star Trek: TNG

That's about it. Other shows I really like, but either didn't finish or can't put on quite the same level:

X-Files
The Sopranos
The Wire
Black Mirror
Mad Men
Dark
Stranger Things
House of Cards
Lost
Star Trek: DS9

What would you add/change about such a list?

The Battlestar Galactica remake is up there for me along with Breaking Bad. I'd put Black Mirror at the top too but it's an anthology series and I think the list should stick to overarching stories. Oh yeah, I'd put Ozark up there too. I'd add Better Call Saul to the secondary list.

I have not watched GOT and it's really not my genre so I really have no desire to do so. I'll have to watch Succession at some point.

I think BB is the best show I've ever watched start to finish. If I catch a marathon on TV, I'll get hooked and watch it as much as I can but I don't proactively turn it on and re-watch it on my own. It's a hard watch for me.

I like Peaky Blinders a lot more and put it right up there with BB, I've watched it 3-4 times all the way thru since it last ended.

I've also watched the first season of The Bear about 3 times so far.

I was really into GOT when I binged it before Season 8, but haven't seen it since. Maybe a few episodes here and there but no desire to re-watch it. Same with Succession, which felt repetitive by the time it ended.

Interesting. I know nothing about Peaky Blinders. I will add it to my watch list. I loved the first two seasons of The Bear. I just started the third and S3E1 was different and not in a good way. I have heard not so great things about S3 but I will keep watching but binging The Expanse right now. The Bear reminded me of another great series on Hulu, Reservation Dogs. Highly recommended.

I put the first season of the Bear as a 10. Second season was very good, probably 9ish. The 3rd season was just OK, maybe a 7 but the dropoff was very noticeable and I don't remember much of it all.

Definitely recommend Peaky if you're into crime dramas. Started as a small show on BBC2 that grew in popularity and moved to BBC1 in Season 3 I think. Then Netflix picked it up before Season 4 and it really took off and grew a cult following in the US. Takes place in Birmingham, England between WW1 and WW2. Very stylized, great acting, music, direction, cinematography and storytelling. Cillian Murphy is Tommy Shelby the way Gandolfini is Tony Soprano and Bryan Cranston is Walter White. Stick with it and maybe watch it with captions because the accents can be hard to understand at first.

Season 3 was unwatchable. A 7 is far too generous. A 4 would be more accurate. My wife loved S1, enjoyed S2 a ton and stopped 4 or 5 episodes into S3. The two idiot brothers really ruin it. John Cena being their cousin. It really adds a very stupid and unnecessary clown show that dominates what's going on far too often and detracts completely from the feel of S1 and S2 of the show.

AIG, I just completed Season 2 of The Expanse. Really enjoying it now. Thanks for the AI push.

No problem. I'm trudging through season 2 of Silo. Wife and I are both snoozing through the last two episodes and are now caught up.

Anybody else watch Squid Game season 2? I didn't even know it was available and streaming until a few days ago. I binged it pretty quickly including the last three episodes last night.

My impression and spoilers:

Also got back to watching Star Trek Prodigy as I was about 2/3 through S1 previously before losing its then streaming service. I heard it was really good Trek, especially S2. Unfortunately, I also read that it has been cancelled. So kind of binging that too and then I'll get back to The Expanse S3.

Just wrapped up season 2, episode 9 of Foundation. So incredibly good. Mori, no idea how you think the show is just space battles and action or whatever. Up until this episode, it's been anything but. So much compelling world and character building and depth. Maybe you dropped it too soon. How much did you watch? Would it be possible to watch in a vacuum and detach from the books?

Totally agree about foundation…. It’s so good. I’m just hoping it can keep it up… there were reports a while back about the current season having issues.

Lee Pace, Jared Harris and the female lead (name escapes me) are all phenomenal.

I'll give Foundation another try soon. I'll try to give it a fair shot and not hold on to the source material so tightly.

Right now the wife and I just rewatched Severance Season 1 (absolute masterpiece) in anticipation of S2 coming out in a few weeks. Loved it. I am also rewatching Breaking Bad solo since it's been several years since I watched that show, and on rewatch it really holds up as one of the best TV shows start-to-finish that I have ever watched. And the wife and I fit in the occasional Seinfeld rerun when we want something shorter and lighter; we are almost done with season 8 (and then comes the slog that is the final season 9). On deck for me will be Silo season 2, and the wife and I will pick some other lighthearted / half hour / comedy show as well; maybe Parks and Rec or Bob's Burgers or Curb Your Enthusiasm. So much good content!

Hmm. I will have to think about a Severance re-watch. I also might have to do the Breaking Bad re-watch since it's one of my all-time favorites. I'm thinking about Battlestar Galactica also as it's also an all-time favorite. Will finish Prodigy and The Expanse first though.

Welp, Marty, couldn't help myself. Started a Severance re-watch before the new season. So good! I forgot how good it is. Up at the top with my all-time favorites. I'll just leave you all with this:

"I’m your best friend. You’re my very good friend."

OK, one more thing. Love the woman at the dinner party whose only contribution is to agree with the points being made by others.

Anybody else watch the Severance Season 2 premiere yet? They dropped it last night on Apple TV. Without any spoilers, I enjoyed it but didn't think it was quite up to the level of Season 1. We'll see how things go as more episodes drop each week.
