Speaking of minutes, here’s a possible minutes distribution in a close game where we maximize the use of the stars and have no garbage time:

PG Tyus 30, Monte 18
SG Allen 12, Beal 36
SF Book 36, Allen 12
PF KD 36, Bol* 12
C Nurk 30, Mason 18

*Depending on matchups

That looks like a really solid rotation. Then again, I thought the same thing about our signings last year.
I likey
I think you have to have time for Dunn, Ighodaro and for that matter O'Neale.
Depending on matchups. That was just an example game. We’re obviously not going to find meaningful time for twelve players in a typical game.

And in the playoffs, when we tighten to a nine-man rotation, I think eight of them will be (if healthy) Tyus, Monte, Allen, Beal, Book, KD, Nurk and Mason. The ninth will — say it with me — depend on matchups. And who earned the time.

Here’s hoping our stars won’t need to put up 36 mpg.

This was an example of “a close game where we maximize the use of the stars and have no garbage time,” not averages.

Let me say this differently...

a. I think for us to win as it gets further into the season, we have to have made the investment to spin up the rookies. We are going to need something from the rookies this year, ie somebody hopefully overdelivering for us...if we're going to make it post season.
b. I think we got two interesting rookies that could provide that extra gas we need to make a substantive difference. However, that means that they can't be riding the pine all season as we've done in the past. We need to make the other 4 potential players there able to take up minutes..injury, whatever, they need to be ready and need to be able to contribute. We can't just hope for the best.
c. I'll add to that it will be interesting to watch the flip to a PG driven flow...with Tyus and Monte, no way is the intention to run the mess we did last year...probably for the best. But I think this ends up meaning we want Beal to juice the second unit. I think we have a legit full second unit that is going to suprise some folk, so rotating people more freely is going to give chances to give us more looks and gas some of the players that will need the minutes to contribute when we need them.

I'm really optimistic about how the mix worked out...and I think in the end with those changes the coaching change was probably the right move. If we see some overt moves made to spread minutes and get different combos comfortable, we could really take some folk by surprise. We'll see...just kind of excited to see how it all comes together.

Leave it to Cap to drop a wildly controversial minutes distribution.

I think we will see games that look just like that with some tweaks depending on health etc. Here are my nit-picks, anyway.

If Monte is healthy, he and Jones will split the minutes more evenly. Until last season, Monte has always played more minutes than Tyus.
I don't think Bol makes the lineup regularly.
Allen and O'Neal will both get playing time right up until one of them is traded. Like with our point guards, Royce has actually had a larger role on more successful teams until last year.

This roster just has so many redundant parts. I mean, dang, dude.

Sounds good if he would accept the role. I guess he really shouldn't have a say in the matter. But we'd need him to embrace it and not pout. He's getting paid handsomely so he had better not! Having said that, he'll probably still start but they could keep it short and effectively give him more bench minutes.

I remember a time, it doesn’t seem that long ago, when a deep team meant you had ten guys who can play, and two guys who are lucky to be there and only play in garbage time or emergencies.

Today a deep team is 12-13 deep and how do you find time for them all?

I don't think he'd be the kind to object as long as he's getting enough minutes and the spotlight. Highlight clips of him torching second stringers will help.

It's clear that we're setting ourselves up for trades. But we can't combine contracts anymore...

I dont think this is a league where max players come off a bench. I also don’t want to debate it to death either. If Beal has another underwhelming year I think it would come up as a ploy to get traded. Anyhoo, enjoy the fantasy.

I also don't think it matters if he starts for 5 minutes and then bolsters the bench.

I just hope we win a ton so that Book and KD get their rest in the second half of every game. I do like the idea of Beale seeing minutes with Grayson and O’Neale to really help maintain leads.

Start Beal so his ego isn't hurt and then as 'Bone said, pull him after 5 minutes. Let KD and Book play most of the first quarter as usual, then as soon as they go out, bring Beal back in again for a longer shift where he can be the primary scorer like his Washington days. Stagger them in the second and third in a similar fashion, and then the big three can close out the game in the fourth (if they are in fact effective together).

You can't just pull a guy after 5 minutes, he'll never get into a rhythm. Allen, Royce and co are fine on the bench, they'll all rotate, I have no worries.

I think he’s more effective as the #2 scorer, which is why I like the two-at-a-time approach to using the Big 3.

Let me just see an identity and rhythm as a team.

Everything was hard and joyless last year

Yep, and a lot of them mentioned that at media day surprisingly. So, it wasn't felt just externally.
