Does that Barnes deal change the expected salary range for Oubre? I'm worried that he'll get bidded up until we can't / don't want to afford him. That deal is a ton of money for Barnes, a strictly worse and less desirable player than Oubre.
Teams and fans like Barnes' versatility as a stretch 4. I'm not sure that Oubre has shown the defensive ability to play the stretch 4, as he and the rest of the skinny SFs on the Suns got pushed around easily last year when forced to play PF. Barnes is much better 3 pt shooter right now.

This summer is looking more and more like 2016. Tons of teams with money to spend and many bad contracts in the making. Oubre at 20M per is absurd. You can't spend 20% of the salary cap on him. I am absolutely terrified about the mid-long term ramifications of the decisions to be mada this offseason.

What do you think the absolutely terrifying ramifications are for the Suns?
  • Do you think that they will let Bridges walk in the future?
  • Maybe they don't resign Saric next year if he has a good season?
  • Do they not use the MLE on a vet next year?
  • Or maybe Cam Johnson prices himself out of the books?
  • Or Book becomes too expensive in the future?
Or maybe you have something else in mind?

20 mill is waaaay to much for a hustle player who hasn't yet played 30 mpg in any single season. Oubre busts his ass on defense, runs hard on offense, and can attack in space. Love his personality and presence. But he doesn't rebound particularly well, pass particularly well, create against pressure, shoot at a high percentage, or draw multiple defenders. He's a midlevel exception guy for a winning team that needs a boost at SF.

I wouldn't call myself terrified, but I sure wouldn't be surprised to see us sign someone average to a big contract and then later use other assets like picks and good players to unload the salary.

The nice thing is that these aren't super long contracts, unless Kelly signs for 5 yrs. Even that, the salary cap is supposedly going up, but overall I agree that $20 mil is a bit much. If they agreed to $12 mil and his hold is $14 mil, they immediately create another $2 mil is cap space. That would be much more ideal, but probably not realistic.

I don’t think this is legit. What teams are going to offer that deal? Kings were the one maybe team and they just signed Barnes. Knicks, Nets, Clippers, Lakers, Celtics, and Mavs are all after bigger fish. Pacers need a pg, so do the Bulls. Who else has 20+ million in cap space? The nuggets and jazz can get close to 20 by dumping Millsap and Favors, but I don’t see that happening and they’d want PF’s anyways. Am I missing a team with space? Pelicans? They need more shooting, can’t see them chasing Oubre.

Oubre is ours if we put a good offer on the table and sign him before the teams waiting on bigger fish can make an offer.

My gut is telling me it won't be less that 16. I'd say 18. Hope I'm wrong tho!

Oubre's cap hold is $9.6M right now. It'll stay counting on the books at that number until he signs his deal which will presumably be the last thing we do. So no matter how much he signs over $9.6 it won't effect our cap space.

I see a lot of the same mistakes being made about calculating cap space. I urge you to look at David's tweet. Blue are the current cap holds.

Yeah but if he signs an offer with someone else before we use the space we'll maybe have to match and absorb actual salary against the cap

He wants to be here. If he signs an offer sheet with somebody else, it’s because somebody outbid us, and we have to let him walk.

The two-day window for deciding whether to match begins July 6. So we would have until July 8 to use our space first.

Jerome said he never did a pre-draft session with the Phoenix Suns. He worked out for the Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Utah Jazz, Charlotte Hornets and Orlando Magic, but Phoenix saw him at Virginia’s pro day after the combine.

After feeling as if the Suns were “really interested,” Jerome was thrilled they chose him.

"I wasn’t really surprised," Jerome said. "I was kind of actually hoping for it, to be honest. It was kind of an ideal fit in my eyes."

That interest factored into Phoenix trading its protected first-round pick it acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eric Bledsoe trade to Boston for center Aron Baynes and No. 24 pick the Celtics got from the Philadelphia 76ers.

Then Philadelphia chose Jerome for Boston, which sent his draft rights to Phoenix.

"I was really hoping they’d be able to trade back into the first round," Jerome said. "It happened. That also made the night so much better because I was happy ending up with Phoenix."

I loved the energy he played with, he was one of the most effective players on the team last year.

While the Suns would like to hold onto Jackson to make sure he isn’t the player they thought he would be out of Kansas, the issue is Jackson makes over $7 million next season and has a team option for the 2019-20 season set at $8.9 million. That’s the price of a steady rotation piece and Jackson has failed to prove he’s that.

Thus, the Suns’ clearest route to opening up more cap space in free agency this offseason is dealing Jackson, and according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, he believes it won’t be difficult to do.

“I think they can trade Josh Jackson in 24 hours if they had to,” he told 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Bickley & Marotta Friday.

But as Windhorst points out, patience is in the interest of the Suns.

“You don’t do it unless you know you have the other deal,” he said. “And the thing is, if you’re chasing restricted free agents like (Malcolm) Brogdon or you’re chasing a restricted free agent like D’Angelo Russell, you may not know whether you’re going to be able to get those guys until July 8 and then the deal that you may have on June 30 for Josh Jackson may be a lot different by July 8.

“If you’re going to give away a player for free, which is what they did with T.J. Warren, you better have a plan for the money.”
