Bender's usefulness as a defender is really intriguing. It looks like he will be able to defend 3's and stretch 4's. I am not sure how well he will defend the interior. But that is a fairly uncommon weapon to have. His defense will earn him playing time immediately, and his passing won't hurt. As odd as it sounds, his role overlaps with PJ most. They are just polar opposites in physical profile.
It also seems to me that Bender and TJ Warren have skills that could blend well.
Yeah, ability to defend the pick and roll, IQ plus scoring/shooting potential is a rare blend at seven feet. Also makes his floor much safer in terms of boom or bust.
I'm thinking PJ should go to the bench. Bender and Dudley probably mesh better and could switch spots on defense, while providing space offensively. Tucker lives in the corner but is not as reliable as Dudley. Absolutely don't start PJ-Dudley, btw.
As for TJ, a lot remains to be seen with his health and development besides his well known offensive tricks, but if we truly want to give him a shot PJ, Tucker needs to be traded. At least one between Bender-Chriss is going to play (please Watson, don't waste both rooks first year), we know Dudley is going to get minutes and Booker will have to spend some time at SF given the landscape at the perimeter.
There is at least one odd man out, and PJ can help competing teams, especially under that cheap contract. Unlike some, I've never been against Tucker, but he looks like a victim of the numbers and team direction here. I can see why a coach would want to keep him, though.
