You could carry around a generator now and charge after you stop, not while driving. A 110 outlet is going to take 8 hours to charge a car. A generator to charge the battery while you are driving is sort of like a hybrid with a gas engine that runs the electric motor. You refuel your generator/engine gas tank every 300+ miles.

I don’t know what the time table is on building that nationwide electric car charging station every 50 miles thing is. That would go a long ways to building trust in traveling with an electric vehicle. Right now people would need to spend around an hour to charge to 80% and be on their way with a fast charger. The return of the drive thru restaurant with the added twist of charging your car could be a big hit in tomorrow’s market business model. Half way between Phoenix and L.A. Half way between Phoenix and Vegas. Charge while you eat and then be on your way.

If you are to drive across the country in an electric car, assuming that's possible, when you stop to charge the car, is it free to the user? How does that work?

Tesla used to include free charging for their vehicles at their charging stations, but got rid of that a couple years ago. It works just like paying for gas.

Not easy to estimate because all cars are different (like filling your Prius to drive 300 miles or your Suburban). But typically you can figure about $1 for 10-15 miles. So if you typically get 250 miles on a full charge, you would pay $20-22 bucks to fill your battery at a commercial fast charger.

At $5/gallon, you would need to get at least 50-75 mpg to get an equal amount of mileage for your dollar.

Obviously it is a lot cheaper to charge at home on a slower charging system.

If you have a 250 mile range, 70% of that is 175 miles. So you got just over 9 miles per dollar (or the equivalent of about 46 mpg at $5/gallon of gas).

Yep. It's kind of wild. We maybe charge the Tesla at a fast charger / commercial charger once every couple of months. Slow charging at home gets us about 80% charge in 6 hours, which is perfect overnight. The only time the fast charger / commercial charger is needed is for road trips. I'm sure as our toddler gets a little older, we'll have more road trips which will make testing using that infrastructure a pretty new potentially painful experience.

I should know this, but do they make convertors so you aren't stuck using only Tesla branded charging stations (since Tesla chose to ignore the international standard for EV charging connectors)?

They do. The adapters come standard in a carry pouch. We keep the pouch under the trunk.

U.S. opens special probe into fatal Tesla pedestrian crash in California

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety regulators have opened a special investigation into a fatal pedestrian crash in California involving a 2018 Tesla Model 3 where an advanced driver assistance system is suspected of use.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on June 7 that a Tesla went airborne and struck and killed a woman. NBC-7 in San Diego said a 39-year-old man was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs in the incident.

A 2015 Tesla rear-ended a tractor-trailer in the Gainesville area at a rest area off Interstate 75, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a police report. Both people in the Tesla were pronounced dead at the scene.

NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation to assess the performance of the system in 765,000 vehicles after about a dozen crashes in which Tesla vehicles struck stopped emergency vehicles - and said last month it had identified six additional crashes.

Hope I didn’t upset you with my post AmareIsGod. I ran across that article and we were talking about Teslas and posted it. I didn’t think anything about it at the time. I glanced back here now and it seemed rude to post it. Nobody’s posted since so it seems I peed in your punch bowl. Tesla’s are cool and at the edge of technology. They all go through growing pains. I might even be buying one soon.

My Volt has been at the dealership for the past month waiting on parts. I only had it back a month from the time before that where it was there three months and a year before that for two months waiting on parts.

Oh, you're good! We actually have the Model 3 Performance and a Model Y Long Range now. We love the Y with a small family now. Went to San Diego and LegoLand California. Airbnb had a Tesla charger which was great. Only 2 charges on the way there and 2 on the way back. Dateland and Yuma. Dateland has 40 charging stations, is v4 350w Fast Charging and all solar! It's amazing. Just built beginning of the year. Between both stops, 30 minutes of charging. 6 hours and 10 minutes drive time.

The extra cargo space and overall interior space plus rear leg room are great. The powered rear hatch and fold down seats let us haul around a lot. We also got the 3500lb tow package. $7500 tax credit is great!

I ordered a Model Y. I thought about the Model 3 but, I will be using it as my gigging PU truck and the Y has a huge cargo area. I folded down my seats in the Volt to get all my gear in. I think I can mostly leave the rear seats up and still fit in all my gear. That would be great. I have been checking out cargo area protection so I don’t destroy the cargo area like I sort of did in the Volt.

I don't think I told you guys but I got to drive my buddy's Model 3 back from Vegas and I was really impressed by the adaptive cruise control and self driving. Really awesome in stop and go traffic when the car can just do it all.

I got these. Can't go wrong (and saved $100 from the ones that are sold directly from Tesla). We transport a lot of plants and things from the nursery so these really save a lot of cleanups. Just pull them out and spray them off. They are an exact fit, which is great.

I don't think I told you guys but I got to drive my buddy's Model 3 back from Vegas and I was really impressed by the adaptive cruise control and self driving. Really awesome in stop and go traffic when the car can just do it all.

It's pretty sweet. Saves a lot of driving fatigue on long trips. The drive to and from San Diego, I was able to take in some of the sights (the visibility in the Y and even the 3, though lower, is top notch) and enjoy conversation with my wife. Just having to rest my hands on the wheel vs. constantly give decent grip and force adds up over that time. Stopping and charging on the Tesla network is easy and honestly, 15 to 20 minutes is not an eternity, especially when you want to pee and stretch your legs, which is never quick and easy with a 3 1/2 year old.

That cargo liner is nice. I am looking for side protection as well though. The plastic sides get trashed when you pile in a bunch of speakers and racks with metal sides.
