I get the feeling that those in and around the league wanted to see the suns make a move at the deadline to make a push for the playoffs. That may have hurt McDonough as well.
I think in our case and situation, the best move was to
not make a move. They should give McDonough credit that he didn't mortgage the future for a chance to maybe make the second round of the playoffs.
I didn't have a problem with McDonough standing pat at the deadline. But when it comes to these awards, they don't award you for what you don't do.
It seems like the winner would argue to the contrary.

I don't think the voters would justify their decision by naming the things Buford didn't do.

That's the point - what DID he do?

Don't give it more thought. The award was McD's to lose if the Suns didn't make the playoffs and unfortunately that's what happened. That void put Buford in a perfect situation to receive am award for his career achievement.

Nothing significant IMO. Here's Sports Illustrated's answer:
After a disappointing loss in Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals, many skeptics believed that the veteran Spurs would take a step back this season. But Buford’s ability to add supporting pieces like Marco Belinelli and re-sign Tiago Splitter and Manu Ginobili was enough to sustain the Spurs’ top-level success.

Thats such an awful explanation. Ginobili was either going to retire or re-sign. Bellenelli isn't earth shattering, and re-signing Splitter may be a plus but its hardly enough for E.O.Y. I don't even remember how much they gave Tiago

Splitter is another case of weird advanced stats. By some metrics he is a huge defensive presence on all accounts. Post, pick and roll, help etc. I know for a fact that he was far from a good defender during his days with TAU Vitoria, but he seems to have developed a ton on tha side of the court. Go figure.
And of course he is making 10M this season. 4/36 was his deal.

Buford is the longtime general manager of the San Antonio Spurs, who had never won the award despite their consistent high level of success.
1. Buford (SAS)
2. Ryan McDonough (PHX)

And INF couldn't be any happier due to McDonough's "bare minimum" job.

Why not? Everything should be considered.

Nope. Swingman said that changes were needed, to make awards fairer I presume. Since I believe winning is what determines in a huge part who gets what, and making the playoffs is an obvious milestone in that regard, my point is that getting the best 16 teams in the postseason would be a move in the right direction.

Yep - that and different playoff seeding. The suckhole that is the eastern conference has been screwing west teams out of the playoffs the last 15-16 years.

Oh, I thought you were saying the top 16 teams were currently in the playoffs. I gotcha.

It's lame that McDonough didn't win this award. But then I remember that it is not even an official NBA award; the GMs collectively agree on it together, but it is not officially or directly sanctioned by the NBA. It's a meaningless non-award. Sour grapes. F**k RC Buford and his stupid award; he doesn't deserve it nearly as much as McD does this year.

I'm not sure how sour grapes would come into it. But discrediting the award just because our guy didn't win, that seems like sour grapes.

he could have sealed the EOTD award with that gasol trade. now all the suns get is dragic as the MIP consuelo de tontos prize for the all star snub (and not making the all nba 1st and 2nd teams)

actually, not making the gasol trade DISQUALIFIES him in the eyes of many non suns media people from the EOTD.
