Rui probably would have helped us more than whatever we're going to end up getting for Crowder.
Factor in that the trading team will need to pay him or lose him and I get it

I don't know, the more I read about Hachimura, the less I like him. Sounds like he doesn't play defense, is only so-so from 3, and doesn't play good team basketball. And he's a FA after this year, so you get him gummed up with Cam Johnson and probably have to pay one and let the other walk. Trading Jae and a 2nd for half a season of that seems like bad asset management.
The Kings/Grizz was a good one. The Kings need to pick up their defense if they want to get beyond round 2, but they'll have a great homecourt advantage and Fox and Sabonis are as good as any other duo in the West.

He would have been a meh replacement for Jae. A neutral trade. I’m waiting to see what JJ does to improve the roster that got smoked in last year’s second round.

A neutral trade? Jae is not even playing! A neutral trade would be a huge win for us at this point. Jae is an expiring contract also, so who cares if Rui is a FA? And one 2nd is not much to give up--Jones has done much, much worse with including draft capital in trades before.

If we’re not making trades due to tax implications, then we’re screwed no matter what.

You can’t just isolate one part of it…it’s not making this specific trade due to tax implications. Is Rui worth it? Yes he’s better than what we’re getting from Jae, but in that case why haven’t we just traded him for Grayson Allen who’d give us more than Jae. Literally anyone gives us more than Jae. That’s not the right question. The question is does this trade help us more than any other trade we can make.
I think it’s also possible we did want to make that trade and Washington chose the Lakers 2nd round picks over the Bucks.
Let’s evaluate the return once we actually know what we traded him for. Then we can see if we should have done the Rui trade or not.

I don’t think they’re going to get anyone better for just Jae by himself. If they’re able to include him in a bigger trade for a better player, though, then I won’t complain.
