I have a lot of respect for INF's take. But I can't give us an F for what we did. The draft was hard to predict and full of decent players without a lot of identifiable obvious stars. I know INF doesn't buy into the conventional wisdom about how you shouldn't have too many rookies on a team, but I think having 2-3 is enough. I wouldn't want 4-5-6 rooks all on the same roster. I don't like that we drafted 2 guys who basically play the same position; that's my biggest concern. But they both seem to have about as much potential as anybody else being drafted in the top 4-10 range. So I'm willing to just wait it out and hope that 1-2 of these three new rooks will be capable of being a rotation player on a very good team in a few years. I will give McD a bit of leeway because he nailed the Booker pick so well last year.

About time you came out of the shadows, n4th4n! And man did you bust out a big take.
INF is literally the only person I have seen that rated our draft an F. I haven't even seen a C! Mostly As and a few Bs. If INF is right, then he knows more than EVERYBODY else. Let's all hope he's wrong on this one as I too really respect his opinions.
I don't share Mori's (Sorry, it's been too long, I can't start calling you Marty!) fear of Bender and Chriss playing the same position. They both seem to be very versatile and I can see both of them playing SF, PF, or C depending on the situation and how they grow into their bodies.

Great post, I know next to nothing about draft, but this time I saw more structure to our drafting that in recent years. I wanted Bender and Sabonis, but I will give this Chriss guy a legitimate chance to surprise me instead of calling him bust and rejoy on being "right".
In a year without sure things, we take TWO swings for the fences, while other years we have settle for sure mediocrity. I liked that spirit, even if a disagree with the choices, even if Sabonis turns out better than Chriss. Because there is a lot of uncertaintity surrounding this, and we are talking about CHANCES, without hindsight at hand, and of course it looks pretty easy and clear behind a monitor with a beer in the hand, with nothing else to lose but some bogus bragging rights in a fans' board.
It is easier to announce the end of the world, eventually someone will have to nail it. And since this is just a hobby for me, I prefer to keep my cool and watch the kids play, diferent thing would be to be one piece away from the Big Chip, and therefore I understand better the frustration behind the Iguodala and Joe Johnson decisions. But given how low are the chances to pick "Right" this year, and conceding that the further away from the top, those chances are smaller, not sure why some are upset about maximizing those chances, if atolladero we miss, we try again next year with little to nothing lost. Bledsoe's prime? Chandler last stand? Please!!!
Not sure also how Bodgan went from a nice euro prospect, to the next Iguodala, just because we trade him and we love to say "told you so"?. The team aproached to him about coming over and likely became aware of his economics aspirations, and even as posible as it is that he could come over next year for the minimum and become an All Star, I am pretty sure he instead throw a number the team didn't like, he could have said that he is unsure to come next year to the NBA, or just not to the the Suns, etc and therefore the team proceeded to liquidate the asset. Again, there is a lot of uncertain here, but after hindsight, it's easier to claim a pound of flesh, on the people calling the shots BEFORE the fact.
I love this post. Can't possibly add more to this other than my fanboy optimism of "I loved the Ullis pick and both Bender and Chriss are 18."

In fact I think having the two guys grow together is a good thing, given that neither is ready to handle starter minutes from the get go. I'd like to use this as a season to experiment and to get the young guys experience. Split the minutes 20/20 and give Teletovic or Leuer whatever's left and call it a day. And move the two lead guards please.

to assess the draft you have to ask yourself, if Bogdan Bogdanovic was in this draft where would he have gone?
If its #3 then this was a fail trade... even if it was top 10 it doesn't look great.

Good point. It certainly wouldn't be top 3

I think he's responding to me. I grumped that Chriss doesn't seems like that much better a prospect than Skal, therefore it wasn't worth giving up all those other assets. Bone's point is that Chriss IS that much better.

Yup. I hope I'm right! If not, it was a waste of assets. Or at the very least, a misuse of them. But a calculated risk none the less.

Come on now, Aztec, that cannot be further from the reality. That unfortunate war is long gone and I can tell you Serbs and Croats are getting along just fine when they`re on the same sports team (they are speaking basically the same language), be that basketball, soccer or some other sport. Novak Djokovic, for example, is like big brother for some croatian tennis players.
I can guarantee Vlade Divac took Bogdan just because he thinks he is a good player, which he is.

The story was originally about Vlade and Drazen Petrovic's friendship that dissolved into enmity when Yugoslavia divided itself into several countries (which I know is not 100% accurate as it was more of a political union, if anything.) The author suggested that it may have been the Serbian ties that had him insisting on Bogdanovic. They did not imply anything about Vlade and Bender just to be clear. That point would be moot anyway since Bender was off the board and we weren't including him in any kind of deal. If you wanted to make guesses about Bender and Bogdanovic getting along or whatever, I suppose you could but there's no evidence to suggest he wouldn't come to the Suns if Bender were on the team.

Pure speculation obviously but I think Vlade would have taken less as long as Bogdan was included. Still think we overpaid but I am willing to forget about it if Chriss shines.

I wonder if our original offer was 13/28/34 for 8. Then sactown asked for Bogdan and we switched 34 for the 2020 second rounder. I'm OK with the trade because I think Chriss could be very good, but we did give up quite a bit of value. It would have been nice to keep #28

I also think we overpaid, but Sacramento had leverage and the higher they valued Chriss, the less restrained they felt to bargain for him. I hope we win the gamble, and I also think that Divac set Bodgan as the main piece of the trade, so the #13 and Bodgan would have been fine to me.

A comparable trade is what Philadelphia and Orlando did a few years ago.
The Sixers moved back 2 spots and picked up a 2nd rd pick and a top 11 protected 1st rd pick a few years later(that was actually their own).
The suns gave up a late 1st and Bogdonovic (whow as also a late 1st). We moved up 5 spots.

One problem is that McD is starting to enter the "results or else" portion of his tenure as our GM. He doesn't get infinite time to miss the playoffs every year, and he doesn't want to get fired. So I do think he will start to panic if we are looking bad and might start to make short-term decisions rather than long-term ones. This concerns me. I like what he said in his recent interviews about not loading up with veterans to try to win now, so hopefully that is genuine.

I'm really hoping Sarver has learned that the revolving door in the front office is bad for business. McD has made his mistakes but hopefully he is learning from them. The last thing I want is to go back to another first time GM and watch him go through the learning experience all over again. I thought Kerr was starting to figure things out before he was chased off. Hopefully Sarver doesn't do the same to McD.
