I'm interested to see what he does with the roster and how he works with Rivers. He went all in on smallball/MikeD's system, will he be able to add pieces around a Simmons/Embiid core if that's what Rivers' wants? The Sixers have one of the biggest analytics depts in the NBA so adding Morey isn't so surprising I guess. But as much as he talked about analytics, stats and "Moreyball", he went and got stars. I would imagine moving Horford's deal would be a top priority.

I read that Rivers and Morey have known each other for a long time. I didn't realize that. I am curious the timing with Brand targeting both Rivers and Morey, and if he thought about that pairing or just went after the best people he could get.

Wasn't Morey an assistant of Ainge's in the front office when Rivers was coaching the Celtics?

Something to think about in terms of draft and FA dates: teams can't signs anyone - even rookies - until next season's salary cap is established.

I didn't know that. but it totally makes sense that we see a boston exec under Ainge get picked up by Houston, starts doing well, and say, "Hey, do they have any other guys we can hire like that?" and get Ryan.

Brand didn’t target Morey. That was all ownership. This move neuters Brand significantly.

Also the Jazz were sold
Yeah, I am going to keep hoping. If they went for 1.6B in a down market, hopefully it will make Sarver think about it. I just am not sure how many multi-billionaires are willing to buy and willing to keep the franchise here.
According to this, he tried to buy the Suns first.
Insider’s report that Ryan was very close to striking a deal to buy the Phoenix Suns but it didn’t work out. However, Ryan found another opportunity in his home town of Salt Lake City to buy the Utah Jazz.

I saw that and am just not going to get my hopes up until a sale is officially announced.

I found this in a short Fortune article.

https://fortune.com/2020/10/28/ryan-smi ... qualtrics/
Smith can afford the markup. He co-founded Qualtrics, with his brother and father, a marketing professor at Brigham Young University, in 2002. In 2018, the company was sold to German business software giant SAP for $8 billion, though it remains an independently run unit and Smith still serves as CEO. The founders’ share of that payday was estimated at $3 billion, and Forbes now estimates Ryan Smith’s personal net worth at $1.3 billion.

No doubt, Sarver hired the less smart and savvy assistant.

There is a possibility. I'm hoping that during negotiations, Sarver got a better offer to his asking price and is in secret negotiations with a much richer potential owner. But, that seems like wishful thinking.

Let's be careful what we wish for. I would have been leary of a Utah native buying the Suns. I guess there's no fear of two teams in Utah though.

True. I don't think he would have move the Suns to Utah, but you would worry that a Jazz fan would try to ruin the Suns.

I totally missed that. In my mind Brand was higher than GM. So I guess with Morey running bball ops, Brand has a new boss. I was thinking they were peers.

Tomorrow is the deadline for the NBA and players to agree on modifications to the collective bargaining agreement. I think that means we will know final numbers on salary cap, etc, and final dates on the start of next season.

No one is going to spend nearly 2 billion dollars to ruin 1 rival of your favorite team that hasn’t even been relevant for a decade.
