Didn't Cotton & McCloud both come straight to the NBA as head coach from College?

Lots of examples of top college coaches that did not do well in the NBA. Pitino and Calipari both come to mind. Having said that, I know nothing about Dan Hurley.

The article I read must not have gone back that far, but yes Cotton coached at Kansas State before taking the suns job in 1970…so add him to the list. Macleod too as it looks like he came straight from Oklahoma…but it seems Stevens and Donovan are the only two to do it in the last 40 years. PJ Carlesimo had some success, but not much.

I think PJ was an assistant in the NBA before he got his head coaching job, but not sure about that.

Became an assistant later, but he went straight from Seton Hall to the Blazers head job

It’s spelled John MacLeod.

And I thought of him, but I also thought that we’re talking about college coaches who were *immediately* successful. MacLeod had two pretty bad initial losing seasons, was on his way to a third before the turnaround and finals run, and then had a fourth wrecked by injuries right after. His win-loss through four regular seasons was 138-190, and it was largely through the patience of the front office and because of the one great playoff run that he was given a chance to stick around and put together a streak of winning seasons.

Cotton is a better answer as far as someone who won right away out of college, although because of the way the divisions were aligned at the time his first Suns teams won 48 and 49 games and missed the playoffs both years.

The only MacLeod I acknowledge is Duncan.

That's insane. Id rather try to draw Jay Wright with that kind of money.

Why does the coaches salary matter to fans? It has nothing to do with the salary cap and shouldn't affect how a team manages their budget.

I'd just pursue a better coach with that sort of investment. Suns are gonna be paying like 16m this year for 2 coach contracts.

Looks like Hurley won't be coaching the Lakers after all.
