"Stumpy" could really score. I was a little surprised he made it to the Hall of Fame, but he had a great college career at UCLA, so that was obviously what seperated him from the pack.
I think Van's tenacity and dependability has kind of been forgotten over the years. If there aver was a "Mr. Sun" it was him, and I enjoyed his color commentary alongside Al on the television broadcasts before he took over as interim coach. His health isn't what it was, so you don't see much about him anymore, but he's as much a pillar of the franchise as anyone (including Jerry C.)
Yep, and him and Tom have been Valley mainstays.

NBA nicknames used to be so money. Stumpy? Amazing.

It would be awesome if Al McCoy was still up for sitting down for like an hour or two long podcast, just recounting the history of the Suns, era by era, from personally witnessing up-close (and even traveling with the team for most of the time) 51 of their 55 seasons.

You might be interested in the two books written by Tom Ambrose.

Or the book “The Little Team That Could... And Darn Near Did! The Famous Rise of the Phoenix Suns” by Joe Gilmartin. I read that one years ago.

That one's getting hard to find. The Suns' 25th anniversary book is another great one for reading about the early days.
And Foul!: The Connie Hawkins Story is one every basketball fan should read.

It was him or Cazzie Russell when the Knicks were deciding who to make eligible for the expansion draft.
Knicks thought Cazzie had more offensive upside.
Van was a great trend setter for the early days of the Suns, as he busted his @$$ on both ends of the court.
Rick Barry said Van Arsdale gave him the most trouble as a defender.
Van had a stroke a few years back, and has trouble speaking now, but is fairly active otherwise.

I know the Van Arsdale brothers have a studio in Scottsdale where Dick paints, but he has vocal problems since his stroke so Tom does most of the public speaking.
Also, I see one of the Original Suns, George Wilson, passed away the other day. Too bad there wasn't any acknowledgement by the team.

Wilson was the opening night starting center.
Rest of the lineup comprised Gary Gregor, Van Arsdale, Dick Snyder and Goodrich.
Wilson was traded later in the season. Phoenix obtained Jim Fox in a separate trade to play center.
