- Gilmartin was the highly-popular sportswriter for THE PHOENIX GAZETTE.
He also wrote a book I read as a kid.

The Little Team That Could... And Darn Near Did! The Famous Rise of the Phoenix Suns

I read that book when I was in high school. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I grew up listening to Al McCoy as long as I can remember. I think it started in the late ‘70s with him describing Truck Robinson, the Thundering Heard(Gar Heard) and Paul Westphal. Westphal was that eras Steve Nash. Al always made me feel like I could actually see the game. He was so good at what he did. He will be missed.

I also went to a Sun Devil basketball game with my Cub Scout troop in the late ‘70s or early ‘80s. Byron Scott, Alton Lister and Fat Lever played in that game.

Heh, I went to one of the ASU basketball games with my dad too.

I did a double take because I first read this as Neil Walk

Posted this in another thread also, but wanted to post it here as well. It’s well worth watching:

"I'm a Deandre Ayton guy."--Al McCoy, September 21, 2022.

Still the last playoff series we won, against the LA Clippers, the night before Al’s 90th birthday:
