Ted Stepien was the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers between 1980 and 1983. His management of a basketball franchise was so poor that he traded away numerous years of first round picks for veterans who did not make the grade. The NBA stepped in 1981 to stop Stepien trading away the Cavaliers future--Cleveland had become a joke of a franchise. Once Stepien sold the Cavs in 1983, the Stepien rule was brought in by the NBA so NBA franchises could not trade away successive years of first round picks.

The Stepien rule if to protect the league from bad team management and prevent teams from mortgaging their future by trading away all of their future assets in an effort to win now. Cleveland traded their 1980 (Michael Brooks) for Randy Smith, their 1981 (Al Wood) for Terry Furlow, their 1982 (James Worthy) for Don Ford, their 1983 (Rodney McCray) along with the 1981 pick in the trade for Furlow, their 1984 pick (Sam Perkins) for Mike Bratz, their 1985 (Detlef Schrempf) for Geoff Huston, and their 1986 (Roy Tarpley) in a trade for Richard Washington and Jerome Whitehead.

It was so bad that in order to find a buyer for the team the league agreed to include replacements for the 1985 and 1986 first round picks.

Thad is gone

Kinda shocked the Spurs got that much for Thad. But, if I'm the Suns, I at least call Goran and see if he wouldn't mind going for a championship as the backup guard here. I know he's been jerked around by the organization more than once, but wouldn't hurt to pick up the phone, especially if we miss out on Gordon.

Big trade! Sixers with a motivated Harden could be a problem. Interested to see how Simmons plays out in BK with Kyrie and Durant.

I wouldn't touch Ben Simmons. Physically Magic Johnson. Mentally Josh Jackson

I wonder if KD will want out. Would people pull the trigger on KD for package around Ayton?

Yeah, I think the Nets win that trade.
I think Harden’s motivation will kick into gear on a healthy full functioning team. Plus he gets the keys to drive the bus. I think this is a win for Philly.
