This is why I don't like the "draft and stash" strategy with late first round picks. It works much better with second rounders.

I'm afraid it's going happen again this year at 28.

I don't know why the Suns would not simply bring four rookies to camp. I'd ditch some of the veteran role players to make room, keeping them only to the extent that they'd provide veteran leadership.

Probably because they are still under the illusion of winning now.

Exactly. Sarver wants so badly to make the playoffs so he doesn't seem like such a failure. He will sacrifice doing it the right way just so he can say to colleagues, "Hey, we made the playoffs!" It's like having a Range Rover parked outside your apartment.

If they pass on Bender because he's not a "win now" choice...

Bender is not. Porzingod. Or the Freak. If you trust Murray or Hield maybe you are better off passing on Bender.

What's up with Balwin.

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/24 ... et-At-$94M

Salary cap for next season set at $94M, higher than expected. This means that the max for the three tiers in FA becomes 22M, 26.5M and 31M.

How much cap space does that give us this offseason?

About $24M.

Probably not a good idea to spend it all in our current situation. Don't throw it at Kevin Love or Harrison Barnes just because we have it.

About 32M. But you have to subtract rookie contracts and any cap holds. But it really doesn't matter. We shouldn't be spending much if we do it right.

Aren't we at 62 for next year right now?

I haven't done the math yet, but it will be more than that even with our cap holds for the 1st round picks. Tucker is only partially guaranteed, and Jenkins and Alan Williams can be outright waived. All we have right now are the 3 big dogs (Eric, Brandon and Tyson), Tucker making $5M and Len, Booker, Warren and Archie still on their rookie deals. Basketball Insiders shows us with a guaranteed total of $52M but that doesn't include the rookie cap holds. With a $94M salary cap we should have much more than $24M.

Edit: We don't have Mirza's bird rights so there's no cap hold for him, and Leuer's is tiny because he made $1M last year. Still have to apply $700k to Beasley and a couple different sites have different opinions on whether we still owe Humphries money. I say no because there's no way we'd have bought him out with $4M or whatever left on '16-'17.

Yep. Good catch. I thought I saw $70M, but that was for 2015-16 and I mistook it for 2016-17.

I assume we bring back Mirza at around 8/year.

I'm not sure those numbers are right. http://www.basketballinsiders.com/phoen ... am-salary/

The exact numbers probably don't matter. I think the bottom line is that the amount of cap room we have exceeds the amount it makes sense for us to spend, assuming we're rebuilding the right way with the long run in mind.

We're going to try to bring back Price, right? He was a steady veteran PG off the bench. Seems like we'd welcome his return.

Too early to say. Depending on the draft (Tyler Ulis? Kay Felder? Isaiah Taylor?) and other moves, there may or may not be room for him.
