Man, this is worth watching for a reminder of what we had. A surprising number of power dunks in a Knicks uniform too. We should have never traded him (in spite of what Mori says.)
1000% agree. I miss that NBA.
His hands must be huge, he rarely bobbled a pass and 99% of his dunks were one handed. I’m not sure I remember any of them getting knocked free. What the highlights didn’t show was how money his midrange jumper became(he didn’t have that when he came into the NBA). And I remember too many people around complaining he didn’t average more rebounds. I was good with it because of what he brought on offense. He was one of the most exciting finishers in the league.
Did he go into the hall as a Sun or a Knick?

Still remember being at that Draft Party at AWA with Nodack, Lazarus, Swing, Cap, and several other folks, breaking out in cheers as the Suns selected him. Seeing Amare fulfill that promise was simply an incredible experience, one that we all shared. It was painful to see him never become quite what he was meant to be with the microfracture -- but his peak was nevertheless lofty and we got a few very good years.
Congratulations, Amare. We've been rooting for you.

One of my favorite memories was sitting in the eighth row watching Amare drop 50 on Portland.
He was guarded, in turns, by Joe Przybilla, Zach Randolph, Theo Ratliff, Travis Outlaw and Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
Toward the end of the game, he was in the open court and did a crossover move on Przybilla and went in for a jam.
I still have the ticket stub for the game ... Jan. 2, 2005.

I remember the draft. Some of the possible choices pundits were throwing around for the Suns included Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Nene, Chris Wilcox, Jared Jeffries, Melvin Ely, Marcus Haislip. Amare was my first preference, and Haislip was the second. Very happy Suns got Amare ... Haislip did little in the NBA and wound up going overseas.

Excerpt from Mike D's HoF induction speech. He has nice words for the Suns players and org. Miss this guy; he was a great coach and led us through one of the most fun eras in our history.

GTFOH! I love, love me some Amare Stoudemire, one of the all-time great Suns. But the guy had one, ONE, good season for New York after he left us. Then his legs gave out on him and he was never the same. Look at bbref; his first NYK season he averaged 25 ppg, the next he was already down to 17, then 14, 11.9, and down from there. I absolutely positively do not regret our decision to let him go rather than paying huge money for all those years of misery, missed games, and poor performance. Love the guy but we sold at the right time. (Ditto for Nash, my favorite Sun ever, whom we traded for four draft picks right as his body was about to break down basically for good.)
Is Thomas Chambers ever going to make the Hall of Fame?
He's a borderline candidate. I don't think we'll see it anytime soon.

I think I've said this before, and I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer. But I don't really think players of the caliber of Amare Stoudemire should be in the Hall of Fame. Amare was a great player in his day; he won RotY, was a 6x all-star, was 1st team all-NBA once and 2nd team four times. But he didn't win a title nor come super close, he wasn't ever MVP or close to it, and arguably wasn't even the best player on the Suns during his prime. His career was a bit short due to injuries. He was really good, but should he be in the Hall? Are we really going to let in every guy who was one of the top 1-2 players for a fringe contender for a handful of years?

Have to partially agree, Amare was very much a fringe candidate. His peak was just a bit too short and he never really hit it -- had he learned what he did after microfracture without the microfracture, he would have been at the Shaq tier. Damned shame but I am still thankful for the truncated version we got.

Also, forgot to ask, but...
...Was Tom close to, or passed his prime by the time we signed him? Cuz it just seems like, and looking at his stats, but he tailed off / aged pretty quickly during his time here.
Here’s to Dillon averaging 2 apg this year and removing himself from that 1st overall ranking!
Gotta be the least entertaining player to watch in the world.
I know it's not elegant or smooth, but he plays his ass off for the Suns and some of you snobs don't deserve his effort.
Fuck that, he's a black hole who takes terrible shots.
I agree with the factual statement that his game is not pretty to watch. I don’t think this assessment is particularly fair tho. Before last year I was firmly in the trade Book camp but the games where he was out last year it was painfully obvious that this team has no one who can reasonably go up against a defender whose normal job is to take on the opposing team’s best players. So if we pick from among those who are barely qualified to be third options on a decent team, Brooks at least always stepped up and took terrible shots with confidence and hit them at a clip well above what I expected of him. So ugly game or not he played a role on this team that frankly the team / coach asked of him and I’m thankful he’s on the Suns.
He was probably our most effective player in the playoffs. He was better at being #3 than Booker was at being #1, if that makes sense.

They signed him at age 29 and three of his four All-Star Games were with the Suns and his two highest-scoring seasons were here too, so I would say he was at his peak when they signed him. It was a huge deal at the time. He was the first unrestricted free agent to change teams. His number started to slip when it became a Kevin Johnson-dominated team and the offence got spread around more and then when Barkley got here he was suddenly 33 and a non-starter.

I would have to say the Hall of Fame hit a low point when Michael Cooper was voted in. He was a great defender, but the other great defensive guards of that era (Sidney Moncrief, Joe Dumars, Dennis Johnson) all did a lot more offensively. Cooper basically road the coattails of the great Showtime Lakers to get in. But K.C. Jones and Frank Ramsey did the same thing with the 1960s Celtics.
Being a role player on a championship team does not make you HoF worthy unless you were exceptional in college (like Bill Bradley). And the people championing Robert Horry need to realize this.

Hmm, can someone smarter than me about the cap please help me understand how it helped us to cut and then re-sign him? Why did we do that?
