2019 NBA Draft Thread
Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
I haven't spent as much time on this draft as I have in the past, mostly because I'm frustrated by the talk about not being able to win with young players. I believe we are going to trade our pick. That wouldn't be bad if we get a legit star back, but you know how it goes with Bobby.
Here are my 4 at the top of the draft (in order):
Zion
Ja Morant
Brandon Clarke
Culver
I honestly like those 4 as much as I've liked 4 players in any recent draft.
Later in the draft, I like these guys (not really in order)
Bruno Fernando
Coby White
Jhontay Porter
Bol Bol
Cameron Johnson

Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
That's not a bad list at all. I would have the same top 4 and I'm excited about the same ones. The other list, I probably wouldn't have Bruno on there personally. I'm a little worried about Porter after another ACL tear. I think at this point he'll be luck to be a first round guy. I'm intrigued by everyone else.O_Gardino wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 8:39 amI haven't spent as much time on this draft as I have in the past, mostly because I'm frustrated by the talk about not being able to win with young players. Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
I’ve got the same top 4 right now, though there is a gap from Morant to Clarke. I do think a pg is more important than a pf, so I’d be in favor of moving the pick if we can’t land Morant. Of course Zion is too good to pass up.O_Gardino wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 8:39 amI haven't spent as much time on this draft as I have in the past, mostly because I'm frustrated by the talk about not being able to win with young players. Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
I just don't think Morant is going to change anything for at least a year. I think they need to find a pg in FA or a trade early in the off-season. If they pick Morant that just means they need to get 2 FAs to start, one for pg and another for pf. I know they need more than 2 FAs, but it's going to be tough to find 2 starting caliber FAs with the small amount of money the Suns have.Split T wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 12:24 pmI’ve got the same top 4 right now, though there is a gap from Morant to Clarke. I’m fully expecting to use Jackson, Warren, maybe Johnson in trades, so we don’t have to fill all holes through free agency.In2ition wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 12:50 pmI just don't think Morant is going to change anything for at least a year. It’s also going to be a lot easier to find a stop gap pg to hold down the fort until Morant is ready. Worst case scenario is we use Tyler Johnson.
Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
Yeah. I’m good with going in to next season with Tyler as the starter and Morant the backup, provided we acquire a solid upgrade at the 4 (I’d prefer Oubre as a 6th man).
If we land Zion, I’d look to flip Tyler + TJ and/or Jackson + picks for Jrue or Conley.

I bet he would impact this team right now if inserted into the lineupIn2ition wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 12:50 pmI just don't think Morant is going to change anything for at least a year. At this moment with Melton starting, sure. I still think he's behind Johnson at this point.iLLmatic wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 8:54 pmI bet he would impact this team right now if inserted into the lineupIn2ition wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 12:50 pmI just don't think Morant is going to change anything for at least a year. Morant will make a ton of rookie mistakes, for sure. But his love of passing and ability to read and run complex offense could be a breath of fresh air to some team.

Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
It's going to take him half a aeason to start to get comfortable running Igor's offense imo. I like the kid, but just think it's going to take him a couple years of learning and maturing physically to become the player this team desperately needs.
I don't think we have a couple years of patience left. If the Suns don't turn it around this next season, Booker will want out. So trading it for someone like Jrue might be the best option.

That's how Minnesota built around Garnett. And Cleveland around Lebron. And New Orleans around Davis. Didn't stop their stars from leaving/forcing their way out.In2ition wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 9:29 amIt's going to take him half a aeason to start to get comfortable running Igor's offense imo. Stay the course. Zion, Morant, Culver, and Clarke are all studs. You don't punt on picking one of them for Jrue Holiday. You'll just end up having an injured player on a behemoth contract.
The Suns can get a veteran PG in free agency.
Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
This. There are probably 5 UFA PGs this year that would be fine vet PGs that are better than giving up a top 4 pick.INFORMER wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 12:50 pmThat's how Minnesota built around Garnett. That Johnson is ahead of him.
Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
The differences are that Garnett first started with Marbury and stayed a long time in Minnesota after Marbury wanted out. The Suns already have 3-4 building pieces in place, not just one. New Orleans definitely did it wrong, not findng the other pieces besides AD after AD was drafted.INFORMER wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 12:50 pmThat's how Minnesota built around Garnett. I think it's crazy to think a vet like Johnson wouldn't be ahead of him right away while he's learning how to be a pro and how to run Igor's offense or how to play defense in the NBA.

Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
I haven't watched Morant very much. But I'd have to think that if we drafted a stud rookie PG, we would have to start the guy. Why draft him if you aren't going to play him? What do we have to lose? Our 20-win pace?
Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
It's not like he's not the future, it's that rookie pgs are not always ready and conducive to winning. Booker didn't start at the beginning of his career, and it doesn't seem to have hurt him. I just think the Suns need to win and build to win longterm next year. If Ja is the pick and shows he shows maturity beyond his years, like Doncic, Tre, Shia and Paul all did, then it's a different story.Marty [Mori Chu] wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 3:33 pmI haven't watched Morant very much. Re: 2019 NBA Draft Thread
They're nowhere close to being good, so having him come off the bench until he's ready to hold his own as a starter seems like the best plan.
But he'd probably still be better than anybody they'd start over him.
