I don't think there was anything obvious about trading at the deadline. You have no idea what was being discussed or who was being discussed. You don't trade 1st rd picks for guys who may help you get the 8th seed for 3months then leave. Especially when its an aging vet like Gasol. That is a receipt for disaster. The team was fun this yr, would of loved to of made the playoffs, but judging by what trades actually went down their were barely any moves made that effected the playoff race (Evan Turner and Hawes were probably the 2 most notable)
Maybe a Spencer Hawes or a Thaddus Young would of been a better course of action and could of been had for cheaper (in Hawes case) , but I think it was obvious that we had a long term plan and weren't budging from it just so we could scoop up the 8th seed this yr. I am perfectly fine with that.

i dont think the indy pick was too much to ask. gasol would have allowed miles plumlee to rest his aching knees for at least 1 month or more like bledsoe. the guy was obviously not right after the all star break.
and if the suns (with gasol) went all the way to the WCF, i'd probably even prioritize signing him up FIRST before bledsoe in the off season--instead of treating this like a rental.

the fact taht you compare the potential gasol trade to this just shows your ignorance. 29 out of 30 GMs with the same situation would have done the gasol trade, while giving up only the indy pick plus okafor. only mcdo stands out for being dumb enough to pass on this deal.

On top of that Lakers` beat writer Mike Bresnahan was talking about how Kupchak wants 2 firsts for Gasol. 3 months rental of injured Gasol, to be frank.

the difference between that trade and the proposed gasol trade was that the suns gave up dragic. everybody except morichu thought it was a bad idea. that blanks trade was a firable offense

there's a reason why the clippers gave up bledsoe for cheap.
Gasol had a groin injury right around deadline that caused him to miss games. He later had a back injury and then finished with vertigo. I still think he has some Gas left in the tank, but he obviously had some injury issues early and often this yr.
Their were several teams that could of taken on Gasol from LA. They also could of used a 3rd team such as Philadelphia who was involved in a few 3 way trades at the deadline to dump salaries to make a deal work.The demand was the same around the league....they wanted 1st rd pick or picks and space. That's what was reported and although I'm not in the room with them the fact that they didn't trade him and other teams that were rumored to be going after him, such as Cleveland, did other things, I think its a pretty good assumption the picks held it up.

If a team were to use Gasol like the Spurs use Duncan, I see no reason why he couldn't still be a very solid contributor. He's still among the most skilled bigs in the NBA, heck I'd sign him to a reasonable FA deal if he were so inclined.
