Well to be fair, we didn’t know Cam Payne was gonna turn into a g league level player again.
Fair, but his history says otherwise. He's kinda always been shit aside from last year. This just felt like regression to the norm.
I think a lot of it can be traced back to him having to share the floor with guys that clog the lane. His effectiveness the season before came while playing with floor-spacing big men in Saric and Frank. He just can't be effective driving to the hoop when it is clogged.

at least I hope that is what caused the awful year...

I think McGee is replaceable and not worth $10M, but his contributions to the team are being forgotten. I’d take him back at something slightly above the minimum (like if we had the BAE available).

I think he was fine, just not worth being your #2 minutes at C. Especially come playoff time. I don't think he meshes well with our 2nd unit.

He's gonna get that 5/245 or whatever ridiculous contract the Wiz are gonna give him. NBA gone crazy.

I think he was still young enough that it could be contributed to him figuring out some stuff. It was also a pretty significant sample size. You don’t want to judge based off that small bubble sample, but he was having huge games in the WCF last season for us.

It would have seemed pretty foolish at the time to sign Payne to a new deal, trade for Shamet(and give him an extension), while also using the MLE on another backup guard instead of a big when Jalen Smith would have been our only healthy backup. In hindsight, ya it seems like we should have just hung onto Smith, signed Biyombo for the minimum and used the MLE on another guard, but everyone would have been freaking out about that at the time.

Portis is a punk, but he’d be pretty good here.

Why? They’re only bidding against themselves. Nobody has cap room.

Certainly an upgrade over Crowder if you could get him for similar money.

I’m guessing you’re talking Portis and not Beal, though I’d love Beal at Crowder money haha

Opting out of 47 million when you’re not that good anymore is certainly interesting. Philly must be giving him a long term deal to make up for it. I would not be excited for that if I’m Philly.

The problem is, he’s an overall worse version of the Ayton archetype (so is Biz). I’ve been screaming for 2 years that we’re missing a 4/5 type that can play with Ayton and then roll up to the 5 when Ayton sits (Kevin Pelton had an article about this today). With last years rotation, any weakness Ayton had on D could be exploited further with the other Cs on our roster. We’re missing versatility. Saric is kind of that, but he’s not super mobile on D and he can’t really play with Ayton. He may have worked against Dallas, though, because our offense was the issue.

I actually think Ish could be a poor man’s version of this but Monty used him all wrong in the playoffs when he went that route.

I don’t get this really for either team. Dejounte and Trae is a weird fit

Even if he were, there’s still the 3rd Rule of Acquisition to consider.

I guess it’s like Utah did with Deron Williams. Tea leaves are that he’s leaving in 2 years so get as much as you can for him.

But why is Atlanta doing it? Trae hasn’t been very good off ball and DeJounte is not a shooter. They are both great players so they’ll figure something out, just don’t think either will be maximized next to each other.
