I hate when GMs operate in a box. I really feel like nothing should be off the table, except for bad character guys. It's fine to draft a teenager. It's fine to draft a senior. It's fine to draft an international player. Sometimes it's ok to take a guy whose jumper needs work. Sometimes it's ok to take a guy who doesn't jump out of the gym. Sometimes it's ok to take the guy who does jump out of the gym.
Too many GMs get too rigid, and it leads to awful mistakes.

The thing is, Haliburton seemed to fit James Jones box perfectly. I would love to know why we passed on him. I honestly hope it was because he asked us not to draft him. I can understand not taking a guy who doesn’t want to be here. I still would have taken him though.

Agreed. And I would say too many *people* operate in a box. Some people have really large, amorphous boxes, and others have very small and very rigid ones. I think the hope is that you learn over time to open it up and let it flex. It took Jones a long time as a player to learn how to fit in and do what was needed of him. I hope he figures it out as a GM before too long. I think it's a eye of the beholder thing for each team. Simmons is a really valuable in Philly's eyes. They would probably want a pick from Houston in a swap, since Simmons isn't asking out. Harden of course is a top 5 player and a former MVP, who may be a better fit with Embiid, but I don't see Philly giving up multiple picks for a guy that doesn't want to be in his current situation.

I haven't looked up how many (if any) other picks they have besides their own. But I could see a couple picks going Houston's way depending on protection. Agreed. Having Morey as the GM probably helps facilitate this. Yeah, even with two unprotected 1sts coming to Houston, I think it is a bad deal for them. I realize they are trying to deal with him asking out, but they need to do better than this. So much has happened so quickly in recent weeks that I can't remember but did Philly and Houston ever talk a Simmons-Westbrook swap? I would've paired Simmons with Harden a lot faster than Simmons and Wall because of Harden's shooting. It'd be tough to take the ball out of any of those guys' hands, but at least Harden can shoot it. Westbrook still could've worked in Philly off Embiid.
