Very possible. Those choices were more what should happen rather than what will happen. Coach of the year is such a weird award that is almost impossible to properly judge. It's more just an award thanks we give to the team who most exceeded expectations. Pop has been so good as a coach for 20 years that we automatically have higher expectations for SA than we probably should based just on their roster.

Spoelstra obviously did something right to get Miami back on track, but they should have been better than they were during the first half. They were awful and spoelstra has to answer for that too.

D'Antoni is basically doing the same thing he always does, it seems like he is more dependent on the right players than other coaches.

Side note, I wonder if Gentry has some similar issues. He remade himself as a D'Antoni like coach and had a lot of success with Nash. New Orleans PG situation hasn't been very steady with jrue having injuries and being just an ok play maker. Hope he does well this year with the AD/Cousins duo. They really need Jrue to re-sign.

You and virtually everyone continually take shots at D'Antoni. He changed the entire mood in Houston this year and they became relevant again. Whether of not he is coach of the year, means nothing. He did a very good job and if I were a Houston fan I would be very happy to have him as my coach.

I'll take the same shot at Popovich. He could not win a game in the playoffs after Leonard went down. Why could he not win with the rest of the players on that roster? Why was he so dependent upon one freaking player? Why does LMA not want to play there? Why was LMA so useless against the Warriors? Why don't you blame Popovich for those problems?

No coach, including Phil Jackson can win or ever has won in this league without very good players that are healthy.

I expect you think Phil Jackson would have won with Steve Nash. I doubt it. I expect he would have tried to trade him and I also expect that is the reason he was not hired by Jerry Buss when Mike was hired by the Lakers. All coaches need the right players and players that fit with the other players on the roster. It has been that way forever. That Laker team was full of egos that no one could have had success with, including the great Phil Jackson. I so wish they would have chosen him rather than Mike.

Of Course Phil Jackson was never ever dependent on Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant or Shaq. Steve Kerr really did not need Durant, Green, Curry or Thompson. The great Greg Popovich certainly did not Duncan. He certainly would have won multiple championships with Pat Burke as his center of choice no problem.

I could really care less about MDA I just hope Watson is able to get the group we have to play as a team on both ends of the court, win of lose.

Virtually all coaches get far too much credit when they win and far too much criticism for losses. Except for Jackson and Popovich, who seem to never get criticized for losses.

Popovich has championship rings, Phil Jackson has championship rings, D'Antoni has onion rings. The length you go to defend that man is crazy.

First off, this was not a shot at D'Antoni and I've never taken a shot at him. I thought he was great for us. His system is great when he has the right players to run it. He struggled in NY and LA when he didn't have good pg's or players who bought into his system. The players deserve a lot of that blame too.

And Pop losing when Kawhi got hurt is not a good comparison. They were playing arguably the best team in NBA history, it would have been a miracle for them to win.

What losses do you want Pop to be criticized for? Hasn't he been in the playoffs in like 20 straight years? He hasn't had a bad season in over two decades, I'm not even sure if he's ever had a bad season. Can't criticize someone for their losses when they don't lose.

Yeah, I didn't see what you said about D'Antoni as a slight. He needs players that can play his style of basketball and then it's a lot of fun and wins a lot of games. Nothing wrong with that.

Never happened, but Woody Sauldsberry won it as an 8th round pick (60th overall) in 1958.

Aside from Sauldsberry, the lowest pick to win it was 1988 ROY Mark Jackson (18th pick).

ETA: Correction. Don Meineke, 12 pick of the 1952 draft, was a second rounder and won ROY.
