I had no idea this was coming. What did he die of (besides “age”)?

Super sad, I remember growing up in Vegas before the days of League Pass and I listened to Al McCoy on the radio ALL THE TIME. He was literally the voice of the Suns, and I fell so in love with this team through listening to him. I'm so sad he didn't get to see the Suns raise a banner.

Oh, no. Exactly what I said too, TOO. So sad. At least he did what he loved almost all the way up to the end. RIP.

I am shedding real tears here. Al McCoy has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I can't believe he's no longer with us.

I am at work and have to keep holding them back. Or at least trying to.

I'm literally crying too. Al was one of those special people that made you feel like he knew you. He would talk to anyone. He led a wonderful life and impacted so many lives. RIP Al. Tell Cotton we miss him too.

Al was one of a handful of announcers that fans connected with more than any player.

I first listened to him in 1975 during the magical season that took the Suns to the Championship Series. For many years if you listened to or watched a Suns game you got the details from Al. Al was a homer, but he was an honest one - he could criticize the team when it was warranted, and that was part of the reason why he had our trust and our loyalty for so many years. And he could be corny sometimes, but he was sincere, and we could appreciate him because of his devotion to the team.

I've seen several of my favorite Suns from my youth pass recently, including Walter Davis and Paul Westphal, who were the stars of the team, but players are transitory. Al was a fixture. Prosk, Colangelo, Van Arsdale..... they all left eventually, but we could always rely on Al to be there.

Rest in Peace Al, you're already missed.

RIP. Al McCoy is what I think of when I think about the Suns. Whatever the opposite is to “made my day” this is it.

Sports fans had it pretty good in the Valley in the 70s when I was growing up. Not only did we have Al, we had Tom Dillon as the voice of ASU and got Vin Scully and the Dodgers on KTAR. It has probably made me too critical of the more recent announcers because they set the bar so damn high!

Very sad news. Al was an awesome announcer and seemed like a phenomenal guy. Never heard a single person with a bad word to say about him. A legend; he will be missed. RIP.

Always remember coming to visit my grandparents in Phoenix and I'd hear Al's voice on the AM radio in the truck as we were getting picked up at the airport. The voice of the Phoenix Suns sure was special.

I literally just found this out and cried. I can remember all through the 90s and 2000s during national games I would turn the TV down so I could listen to Al on the radio instead. A true legend.

I remember trying that and it didn’t work. Al was always like ten seconds ahead of the TV broadcast.
