Hi gang,

I've been thinking about putting a Google text ad on this site. It'd be a text-only ad served up through Google Ads that would just sit at the bottom of the page. No pop-ups, no animation, no flashing images, etc. Single unobtrusive ad at the bottom.

The motivation for it is, I pay a modest amount per month to host the site, and while I am not exactly poor, an ad would basically bring in enough $ to pay for that and make the site essentially free of cost for me to run indefinitely. There are of course lots of other ways to get money, but I don't really want to do a PayPal or something like that where the actual users have to cough up their hard-earned money. That just seems wrong to me.

Question: Does the idea of an ad on the site hugely offend any of you? Some people seem to really strongly react to ads and hate them and leave sites because of them and so on. Would an ad here affect how you feel about the site, whether you visit the site, how often you visit here, etc? If you feel strongly that I shouldn't put an ad on this site, can you let me know your reasoning, along with how you think I should generate the revenue to make the site break even?

I'm anti-ads. I'd rather you open up donations through pay-pal or something. Just be open about how much it's costing you, what we need to hit monthly and i'm sure the community here can make it happen.

Doesn't bother me, if someone is that opposed to it they can always use AdBlock or something similar. Bits ain't free!

Ok by me, Mori - do what you feel you need to do to support the site.

Text-only ads sound pretty innocuous. Give it a try. It's not like signing a long-term contract. If it turns out to be annoying, you can always stop.

Is it an ad that requires clicks to generate $$? If so, I'll click that son of a bitch daily.

Of course Mori, ydo what you need to do to make it easier on keepng the site up. Even if a click here and there is needed every once in a while, I would be glad to contribute.
