A bunch of people died today, including my friends cousin, because we as a nation don't have enough guns.
Can someone change the channel? I'm getting really fucking sick of this one.

If only everyone involved were armed to the teeth! *THEN* this tragedy would have been prevented. </gunnut>

Thanks... I didn't know the cousin, and am not particularly close to the friend either. But it's pretty weird feeling something like this hit someone you actually know.

Yeah. It was the same for the Lafayette shooting. One of the girls killed was the niece of my girlfriend's mentor. I didn't know her but still made me feel awful for days.

He makes great points. On top of the fact that exchanging gun fire from a distance potentially could cause additional students to be killed in the crossfire. Anyone that has fired a weapon, especially a hand gun, knows that at range, it can be very difficult to be on point with your aim vs. bullet destination. It's the same thing with a movie theater shooting. In a dark, chaos filled movie theater with a shooter, do you think an armed "good guy" is going to be able to calculate a shot and hit the attacker without endangering anyone else, based solely on perceived muzzle flash? I think "gun nuts" feel like countering someone trying to kill others with a rifle or gun plays out just like a video game and you can eat rounds while firing back, at a distance, while hitting your target repeatedly and not shooting anyone else. Think again. I've had countless friends that have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan and fought in urban warfare in the city streets that can attest.

And those same friends were firing from "assault rifles", not hand guns.

Yeah, being trained to defend yourself and shoot a gun is one thing. Being trained to do it in a crowd, while not causing more damage than you prevent, is another. And let's say everyone is packing. That first shot gets fired, and suddenly everyone has a gun in their hand looking around for someone to kill. As soon as the second shot gets fired, everyone is confused and either running (smart) or trying to figure out which one is the bad guy. As soon as a good guy hits the wrong person, he looks like a bad guy.

In the larger issue of gun control, I can't understand why conservatives say shut like this. They are so paranoid about having their guns taken away that they won't even talk about how to address the problem of school shootings. But repealing the second amendment isn't even on the agenda for most liberals.
But what they don't get is that their party is dying. Both from old age and being increasingly detached from reality. It will be a while coming, but the modern Republican party will not exist in 30 years, at least as it is today.
And in that time, every school shooting they fail to address and attempt to prevent pushes us closer to a point where people really will want to take their guns.
