It's a fair deal, but if we really like Kelly it's a shame not to lock him up for longer at a slightly higher cost per year. Now he'll be a UFA in 2 years.

I wonder which party was pushing for such a short contract.

I'm fine with this contract.

I'm not convinced that he's more than a fringe starter on a contending squad. The Suns aren't contenders, but that doesn't mean they should overpay him for his ideal role.

It's also wise to not tie up a lot of long term money for when they have to pay Ayton and Bridges, not to mention that they'll likely look to retain Saric.

If it was longer it would have been lower. He's betting on himself it seems like and we should have a lot of space for that 2021 FA class. I think we probably offered him the TJ Warren special.

Either he wanted more money in order to sign a longer deal, or we were lowballing him and only agreed to 15M/yr if it was a short-term deal.

As the years get shorter the price of doing business goes up. Why are we thinking a longer deal would have been more per year?

It would make sense if the Suns were holding to the $13-14M/year range and Oubre wanted the $16-18M/year range. Split the difference and shorten the deal by a year.

I like this deal. 2 years will keep him hungry since he will still be playing for a contract in the near future. If he isn't what we think he is we show him the door.

I want to know if the second year is a player option.

https://arizonasports.com/story/1996478 ... -contract/
The contract allows Oubre back into free agency as a 25-year-old, after the 2020-21 season.

Oubre, 23, injected life into the Suns this past season when he was acquired from the Washington Wizards in late December. In 40 games for the Suns, he put up the best numbers of his career, averaging 16.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.4 steals per game. He also did so efficiently, with a career-best field goal percentage of 45.3.

Due to the Suns holding Oubre’s Bird rights, the team is able to go over the cap in order to re-sign the former first-round pick.

I don't think they can do a 1+1 as an RFA. I'm trying to find out but it's being reported as a 2-year guarantee.

Good deal. I feel relieved because it incentivizes in some ways for Bridges to be the starting 3 just knowing that Oubre isn’t a long term investment.

I like the shorter deal. We’re not sure what we have in Bridges or Oubre so this will allow us to reassess our starting 3 man in 2 years and decide where the money is best invested. If Bridges ends up declaring as the starter don’t want to be locked into Oubre at 18-20M per. And if he doesn’t develop like we’re hoping and ends up best suited as a bench player, while Oubre blossoms, then we up Oubre again in 2 years. Win-win

We should have a clear picture of what we have in Cam Johnson at that point in time as well. If Bridges and Johnson look good, that makes Oubre expendable and we move into the summer of 2021 with max cap space.

Good. A deal that won't wreck the salary cap and preserves flexibility going forward. Let's hope this was a clean negotiation and there is no bad blood between the player and the FO.

i'd still in favor of signing shaun livingston to a one year deal. suns goal this season is to make the playoffs so jerome shouldnt expect much playing time unless somebody gets injured at guard.

jerome, rubio, tj, livingston
oubre, mikal, cam
baynes, ayton, saric and kaminsky
