I was thinking of looking at the list of max players and try to decide whether Ayton deserves the max based on that group. Here's the list:

https://www.espn.com/nba/salaries

Ayton is the #40 highest paid player in the league at $32.4m / year. If you look at the guys paid more than him and ask, "Does this guy deserve this much money?", the following guys jump out as "No" candidates:

- #6 Bradley Beal: $46.7m / year (oof)
- #12 Klay Thompson: $43m / year
- #13 Rudy Gobert: $41m / year
- #19 Tobias Harris: $39m / year
- #21 Ben Simmons: $37.8m / year
- #26 Kristaps Porzingis: $36m / year
- #28 James Harden: $35.6m / year

There are a few other "iffy" ones, but most of the other guys up in this range are pretty good and probably worth the money.

It really only makes sense to compare within the same positions (guard, wing, big), and sometimes role can be a factor to consider.

Of all the hills to die on and players to like you choose Ayton. That’s simply mind blowing to me.

Must have been that monstrous 1st quarter carrying his team on his back…. Man he’s such a puss, good riddance. I’m sure his team mates get tired of him always talking a big game and never showing up. So funny how they play better without him….

How long till the blazers try to trade him?

I gotta say, I think I can admit I'm happy to see our former center doing well on our rival to the northwest. He's not shooting as well as he did last year but he's averaging career highs in rebounds/36 and he's right there in assists/36. You're kind of left wondering if we got all we could of out of him while he was here. Obviously there were some stretches where we were impacted by some poorly timed missed games, but he seems to have found a home where he's appreciated by his teammates and his coaches. I'm talking, of course, about Dario Saric.

I wasn’t going to be the one to bump this thread, but now that we’re here, Ayton has 10FTA in the last two games!

How is he piling on? 10 FTAs in two games is great for him. I think he had 7 total in the first 14 games.

Bump!

Nobody look at the per 36 minute stats of our current center vs our former center!

No - don't look at the advanced stats either!

I happened to watch the end of their game tonight. Ayton was Ayton but Camara was nice. Had a game saving block at the end of regulation and some nice plays.

I think it goes without saying…. We won that trade hands down. Allen and Nurk play with 100x the heart than Max C.

We dodged a bullet on that one boys. I’m sure the blazers loathe us even more now lol.

Is it time to declare this debate over. Mr Max will never get another max deal. That talk about averaging 25/10 was silly.

Nurkic is better at basketball than Ayton is. Ayton has much more physical talent, but Nurkic has a far higher IQ and plays harder, which is insane because he's 1/4 the athlete Ayton is.

While averaging only 30.7 mpg in those seasons. There's no way his minutes are that low this season.
I can’t wait to hear the excuses when his averages are all the same next year if not worse
How about this? If that happens, I will admit I was wrong about Deandre Ayton.
Is it time?

Last year: 18/10/1.7/0.8 with 0.6 steals in 30.4 mpg
This year: 12.9/10.8/1.6/0.8 with 1.2 steals in 31.9 mpg
