I appreciate that Mitt Romney has had the courage to speak out against Trump/MAGA. He's right about the border issue. It's a pity he only found the courage to do so after exiting from politics.

He’s been speaking out on Trump the whole time…it’s why Utah voters turned on him and probably part of why he stepped away. Likely wasn’t going to win reelection.

Romney isn’t Maga bat shit crazy enough. Way too honest and too moderate. Definitely not Maga. They hate moderates in their party.

Biden is saying help me fix the border issue and that is causing problems for the GOP because they need to campaign on the Dems not wanting to fix the border. It’s probably causing problems for the Dems too because hey are used to fighting against the GOP on border issues. Biden meeting in the middle and saying join me in fixing this is a very Presidential thing to do and makes him look like the only adult in the room. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

No, Romney is an idiot. The Senate deal wasn't killed by Trump. Other Senators looked at it and said this is a complete clownish f'n joke. It does nothing to secure the border and will absolutely get killed immediately in the House.

Well, he's part of the old guard neocon establishment a-holes, that only want power and could care less about the people of this country or the state he represents. He acts all high and mighty, but is a complete bafoon who detests his own constituents. Just part of the criminal faction of the party, that is all about how they look and present themselves, no actual brains about what they are doing, other than f everyone over.

How is Romney part of any Iraq invasion decision? Mitt Romney was not in any national political power on 9/11 nor when the decisions were made to invade Iraq. Can you elaborate?

He's just part of the same establishment leadership crowd. His daughter is the chairman of the RNC. Keep it in the family. His son was also on a board in Ukraine, like Hunter.

The National Guard is controlled by the governors of each state and they are part of the US military and can be controlled by the President too. Federal trumps state. Are they calling them to Texas to fight immigration or are they calling them up to make a statement? And what is that statement if so? If you won’t do anything we will? Texas started blocking Border Patrol from doing their job. Trump trying to call in more National Guard from other states? Are they threatening violence if the US government tells them to stand down?

I think the Feds will try to deescalate the situation as Trump/Maga/Texas try to escalate the situation. A showdown between the National Gaurd and the real military wouldn’t be pretty. Biden would order the National Gaurd to stand down. We would find out which ones are loyal to their country and which ones are loyal to Maga.

They will find out that the border and 100 miles from the border(all borders in the US) are controlled by the Feds. States backing up TX has created an interesting situation. Biden could certainly federalize the National Guard and suspend Habeas corpus in that area and declare Marshall law. Or he could use an exception to the Posse Comitatus Act, derived from the Enforcement Acts, to send federal troops to the border. He probably does the first one and takes the power of the National Guard away from the governors to restore free flow of migrants into the country, because protecting the border, even though is one of the main jobs of the President, is not what Biden wants to do.

Biden does not need to declare marshal law to federalize the National Guard. He just has that power as one of his regular duties. Marshal law is much broader and basically lets the President do anything he wants.

Same "legal" theory as used to justify secession in the Civil War. Great news!

Biden praises bipartisan immigration Bill in the works. Trump, afraid it might help Biden’s re-election chances tells Republicans to kill the deal.

Biden vows to ‘shut down’ an overwhelmed border if Senate deal passes
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... al-passes/
President Biden said Friday that he would use new emergency authorities to “shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed” if Congress passes a bipartisan immigration plan that the Senate has been negotiating.

In a lengthy statement Friday, Biden praised the bipartisan border deal senators have been negotiating, calling it “the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country.”
“It would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed,” he said. “And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law.”

The deal also changes the U.S. asylum process with the goal of reducing the average time for an asylum claim to be resolved from several years to 6 months, the people said. It also raises the standard for migrants to be able to make an asylum claim in the first place.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Thursday took aim at former President Trump for pushing Republican lawmakers to oppose a border deal so that he could use the issue to campaign against President Biden in the 2024 presidential election.

'Immoral': Some Republicans rebuke efforts to kill immigration deal to help Trump
The fight over an emerging border and foreign aid bill grew tense Thursday as the GOP split over whether to sink the deal to boost Donald Trump's presidential campaign.

It seems to me that blowing up the immigration deal just to say on the campaign trail that Biden didn’t do anything is easily countered with “We tried to do something but Trump and the GOP killed the deal just to make Biden look bad and obviously aren’t serious about fixing the border.”

Reminds me of when Nixon killed the Vietnam peace talks to help his chances of being elected. US soldiers paid the price.

I agree. But recent history generally shows that voters blame the incumbent when things "don't get done," regardless of the details. So to some degree Trump and the GOP are probably right that stalling or killing this deal will hurt Biden more than it hurts them.
