The Dame buyout makes me think we are about to buy out Beal. Because it shows our FO that that is a thing that teams do, that it is normal to pay a guy $100m to go away. I won't be happy if we buy him out, but I guess it will provide closure if nothing else. Pretty shocking that we will have traded one of our "Big 3" for two bozos and some 2nds, and we paid the other one $100m to leave.
Well we also got one of our firsts back.

Beal is the only way out of the 2nd apron…unless a miracle trade occurs, he’s getting waived and stretched, so prepare yourself now
You can still find takers for Allen, Royce and Richards. The new players added make them disposable at best, redundant at worst. I gotta believe you can find teams willing to provide cap flexibility and modest assets (second rounders) for each.

And if Beal is gone, it better be a regular buyout where he leaves salary on the table in exchange for his freedom. Otherwise, keep him.
You can, but I’m not sure there’s really a team that can absorb all of Grayson…maybe Brooklyn can still, but you probably need to find a 3rd team that would want Grayson and have them send a contract to Brooklyn…Brooklyn will want to be compensated…unless whoever they are getting is someone they are interested in.

I don’t think Royce and Richards alone gets us far enough to be under the apron.

Just stretch Grayson if you have to. Would be much better than the cap hit from Beal.
I don’t think that gets you far enough…but also you could combine that with dumping Richards and/or Royce and it might…

However, waiving and stretching Grayson is dumb because he’s tradable…he’s got value. I’m not sure there’s a way to fully absorb his salary somewhere, but we could probably trade him for say someone at 9-10 million and save basically the same amount you would in a stretch.

It's amazing how this FO - mainly Ishbia and Bartelstein - got completely worked over on the KD/Beal transactions. Seeing Beal get his money and choose a contender to play for must really bite. Hopefully they learned their lesson, but I guess we'll see.

The second apron is at $207.8M. Right now we stand at $222M adding the $7.2M rookie contracts for Maluach and Fleming. Dumping Royce and Richards ($15.1M combined) puts you right under.

Allen is harder to move for these purposes, agreed. But also elite at what he does. On the other hand, Royce at $10.1M fits into the MLE so that should open up more options. Richards is merely 5M. Can't believe there is not a taker out there for these players when all you are asking is a TPE and maybe some second rounders.

You have to replace Richards and Royce with vet min contracts though, so they don’t save you 15 million…it’s more like 11

True. But we can have a 14 player roster so we can add a 1.27M zero experience guy to complete it so a little closer. Finding someone to trade for Allen would remove the issue, as well as Beal forfeiting just enough money in an hypothetical buyout (no stretch please, that's crazy for us).

Yes it’s possible to do, I’m just saying it’s pretty difficult and takes 2 or 3 different moves and takes 2-3 rotation players out of your rotation. I think if we were going to use Royce or Grayson to get under the 2nd apron, we would’ve done it already. I don’t like the Beal waive and stretch either, but it’s pretty clear it’s coming.

Agreed. Let's hope they find a better way than stretching Beal.

The lesson Ishbia has learned is that he should be MORE involved in transactions and day-to-day management of the team. He said so himself, and it certainly was Ishbia on the phone with Rich Paul being told whom to draft at #10. So I think they have learned "a" lesson, but perhaps not "the" lesson you/we would want them to learn.

It fits your negative narrative better but Paul didn't tell Ishbia who to draft. It was Ishbia telling Paul that the Suns wanted Maluach.

I thought this was a pretty good observation. The FO was comfortable giving up what it gave up because it was so confident in KD. Same with Beal, even tho we didn't give up a ton. But the confidence in him working out and being a part of the Big 3 was there. And then they were so sure Fleming was THE guy in the 2nd round that they aggressively moved up to get him. We lost on 2 of those 3, we'll see how this draft nets out eventually. And I know some will say "I'd rather have an owner/FO be aggressive like that" but it can backfire just the same. Sometimes a more measured approach is necessary.

Media must love to have a team to kick while it's down. So easy to second guess and pile on for clicks.

It's not just media. Even many of their own fans assume the worst. Even seem to enjoy it.

It's weird. Might as well go do something else if you're not going to enjoy yourself.
