SVG really made a mess of things there. Simmons tweet cut to the quick.

Coaches can't be GM's. Shit just doesn't work.carey wrote:SVG really made a mess of things there. Simmons tweet cut to the quick.

Love, Hurts.
Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
SVG is a very good coach. He should never have been the GM.carey wrote:SVG really made a mess of things there. Simmons tweet cut to the quick.

Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
I really hope the era of the Coach+GM is coming to an end.
Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
When has it been successful? Riley is the only coach/GM I can think of off the top of my head and I'm not even sure if he was. (at the same time.)

Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
When the league first started, all the coaches shared GM duties with owners. Nobody was paying a whole front office staff. But even Red gave up coaching about half way through his career to focus on his GM duties.Cap wrote:Popovich. Red Auerbach.Superbone wrote:When has it been successful? RC Buford has been the GM in San Antonio for 16 years, and even won Exec of the Year twice. I'm sure Popovic makes the call when it comes to trades and free agency, but he has a GM he trusts to do the work of negotiating contracts, managing scouts, and keeping up with the other 29 teams in the league.

How about Thibodeau?
What was the reason to get rid of Monty again? Oh yeah, that guy we drafted rather than Doncic.
Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
The Wolves have improved under Thibs. But he is showing clear signs of letting his GM work negatively affect his coaching work and vice versa. Acquiring so many veteran Bulls cast-offs like Derrick Rose, Taj Gibson, and so on has really changed the makeup of that roster. They had moments where they were playing 3-4 ex-Bulls on the floor at the same time in important minutes. If they had a real GM, they wouldn't let him make silly moves like that. Doc Rivers did similar things as Clippers coach/GM, acquiring late-00s Celtics players.JustWinBaby wrote:How about Thibodeau?

Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
Credit to Thibodeau for holding out until he could get himself into a position of power in Minnesota, not to mention a pretty damn good roster. Unfortunately for Wolves fans, that's about the only thing he's done. He's not done well as a GM, and I'm not sure he's that good of a coach.

Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
It looks to me like he did better as a gm than as a coach. The Wiggins extension is brutal, but it's possible he didn't have much of a choice with the owner on that one.
Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
Yup, but before Buford, Popovich did both roles for a while, and was effective.O_Gardino wrote:When the league first started, all the coaches shared GM duties with owners. He won't last there. Guaranteed.Flagrant Fowl wrote:Credit to Thibodeau for holding out until he could get himself into a position of power in Minnesota, not to mention a pretty damn good roster. Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
Nobody lasts anywhere. Well, you could say that Pop and Riley have, but really that is it. The league has probably had 300 head coaches since Pop took over in SA, so really, you just hope to last through your contract and get your next gig.
Re: Around the League: 2018 Offseason
Jerry Sloan lasted a long time, but yeah, long coaching stints are very rare in the NBA.Indy wrote:Nobody lasts anywhere. Well, you could say that Pop and Riley have, but really that is it.
