Thought experiment: you're the GM, what do you do?

Post by Dan H »

Only caveat is no crazy trades. You can't trade Reggie Bullock for LeBron.

Current roster:

Eric Bledsoe
Reggie Bullock
Archie Goodwin
Danny Granger
Gerald Green
Brandon Knight
Alex Len
Marcus Morris
Markieff Morris
A.J. Price
Marcus Thornton
P.J. Tucker
T.J. Warren
Brandan Wright

First things first: I give Hornacek another shot. I don't know that there are any better replacements available, and I still think he has promise.

Bledsoe - I trade him if I can. Proposed deal: Eric Bledsoe, Archie Goodwin for Tim Hardaway, Jr., Jason Smith, and #3 overall (assuming NYK doesn't win lottery). With the #3 pick, the Phoenix Suns select D'Angelo Russell, SG, Ohio State. Hate to give up Archie but you have to pay to move up. At #14, the Suns select Myles Turner, PF, Texas.

Bullock - cheap reserve, trade/cut fodder if other opportunities emerge.

Granger - released.

Green - not retained.

Knight - any offers matched, starting PG.

Alex Len - starting C.

Morii - not sure if their value is positive or negative at this point. May have to package them to send another first-rounder to New York via a third team; I like Myles Turner a bit for us.

AJ Price - end of the bench, cut/trade fodder if need be.

Thornton - expiring, on the downside of his career. Possible reserve option but not for 8.5/year.

Tucker - reserve SF.

TJ - starting SF.

Brandan Wright - re-signed, valuable big man off of the bench.

PG - Brandon Knight / Tim Hardaway Jr. / AJ Price
SG - D'Angelo Rusell / Reggie Bullock
SF - TJ Warren / PJ Tucker
PF - Myles Turner / Brandan Wright
C - Alex Len / Jason Smith

Still need a couple of guys to fill out the roster, but those can be 2nd round / street free agent types. Maybe Danny Granger if he's interested in a role of some sort or to work with our trainers. Super young, but at least it clears out some of what are perceived as the biggest problems on the roster.

Eric Bledsoe - look to trade him, but you have to get assets in return, not just cap relief. if you keep him, he has to play off the ball more than he did this year.

Reggie Bullock - invite him to training camp.

Archie Goodwin - get him a shot coach and hope he can play significant minutes next season.

Danny Granger - waive.
Gerald Green - renounce.

Brandon Knight - re-sign, use as starting PG next year.

Alex Len - work on offensive game, use as starting C next year.

Marcus Morris & Markieff Morris - look at packaging them together. I wouldn't mind keeping Markieff as a PF in the rotation, but I don;t have a lot of use for Marcus.

A.J. Price - invite him to camp if you don't draft or sign a backup point guard.

Marcus Thornton - renounce.

P.J. Tucker - use as a reserve.

T.J. Warren - starting SF. And get him a lot of shots.

Brandan Wright - re-sign, he's the best backup center we've had since the early Oliver Miller.

I think this team still needs a starter quality SG and PF because I don't see Bledsoe as PG and Markieff as PF as real answers if you want to build a championship-caliber team.

Looks like the board's of one mind on this one. :D

I've turned against Turner, though... not sure he'll make it on the next level. I'd be open to trading up, down or out of the draft.

Draft doesn't look great for 4s. I wonder if any of the 5s could coexist alongside Len. Turner is pretty raw yet and that might not be the best fit when we'd be playing youth at most 2/3 and 5 already.

Proposed from a Bulls fan: Taj and #21 for #13.

I'd do it if I could move both Morris twins. Knight or Bledsoe/X/Warren/Gibson/Len? I haven't even researched what wings are available. Matthews but that injury can be hard to come back from.
Go Suns!

I think Carey might be right about Harrell being our best option if we stay put. I like Porzingis, but we'd have to move up to get him, and he'd also take time to develop. I wonder if we wouldn't find better value by trading down in the draft.

Junior from a big time school, little short but long arms. I'd be good with that if this didn't pan out . . .

I'd do that deal. That would give you Knight / Russell / Warren / Gibson / Len as a starting 5 with #21 being an extra body off of the bench.

Maybe a Sam Dekker @ 21.

Its tough to answer this because so much is depended on hypotheticals.

Like you don't know who is looking to trade who or who is looking to trade picks and who isn't.

I agree with most of the orginal post, I'd look to deal Eric, but I'm not just giving him away. He still has value and probably a lot of it, outside of this orginization to some teams. I would try to re-sign Knight, but I wouldn't compund the Laker pick mistake, by signing Knight to a overpriced contract. I'd definitely look to move Tucker and Marcus....I'd keep Kief, but again this is a guy I think that might be more valuble then a lot of people think. His contract is very reasonable. No way I re-sign Green and I'd operate under the assumption I'm going into next year with Warren and Len will/should be starters. I'm not trying to build a juggernaut all in one year, but to put myself in better position for the future again.

If there is any way to trade up for a top 3 pick i do it without hesitation and if There is anyway to deal for LaMarcus Aldrdige I do it without hesitation. But I don't think either exist.

One thing is Ryan has been a pretty good drafter while here. Love the Warren pick. Len is still a work in progress but looks like a top 5 pick in that draft, Jury is still out on Archie, but at #29 he is the type of high upside guy that has shown promise. Hated the Ennis pick, but again jury still out on him. Hopefully he's able to get an impact player at 13.

I saw that one too. I'd do it. Can't believe the Bulls would, though. Maybe they'd take Marcus Morris in return. Or PJ.

I get Cousins and Winslow by any means necessary. We can play 2 on 5 next year for all I care.

That Lakers pick could have been a key centerpiece for a player like Cousins. But we have the amazing Brandon Knight instead.

I don't think the Kings will be interested in trading Cousins.

TOO said "any means necessary." We're gonna make Vivek an offer he can't refuse.

Does he have a favorite horse?

We've got to start thinking outside of the box... Or stable in this case.

If you're keeping the roster in tact, Hornacek has to go (sorry Jeff). I'd hire Mike Malone and then make a play for Boogie. I'm not hiring Malone because I think it gets me Cousins (Cousins really liked Malone), I think Malone's discipline is needed for the roster. It may take a year for guys to get his system and to break bad habits but I think we'd be a lot better in the long run. And if Cousins takes notice, great. I just don't want people to think Malone is a proxy hire so to get Cousins to force a trade here to play for a guy he likes. That's part of it, but i think Malone is a hell of an Xs and Os coach and the kind of guy needed for this roster.

If we're keeping Hornacek, I think you have to commit to one PG, for me Knight, and try and trade Bledsoe. Knight I think can run the system better but like Hornacek said, we need more shooters.

I'd try and trade the Morris Bro to Detroit for a re-signed Monroe.
