Offseason coaching carousel

Post by Mori Chu »

Not sure that this really deserves its own thread, but it looks like the following coaches are going to the following places:

The Magic hire Scott Skiles:

*

The Bulls have offered their head coaching job to Fred Hoiberg:

And Warriors lead assistant Alvin Gentry has had two interviews for the Pelicans coaching job and may be given that offer:

I like the fit of Gentry in NOLA. I was a big fan of his time here.

Gentry is great. I hope losing him from GS doesn't set them back too much.

I doubt it. The system is installed now. I think Kerr and Curry probably have a handle on things.

The Suns gave Gentry a raw deal. He was a great coach and Saver/Blabby ran him off. Shameful.

Somehow I totally missed the news that there are rumors of Jeff Hornacek being considered for the Iowa State job if Fred Hoiberg vacates it. That's Horny's alma mater. He denies having interest, but, hmm.

If somehow Hornacek weren't our coach, would you want Thibodeau here? I bet Thibs takes a year off to recover from his Chicago trauma, but still, it's an interesting question. He'd probably drive our players into early retirement and break their bodies, but we'd have some good defense. Probably have to gut half the roster because they'd drive him crazy with they sloppy D.

the more relevant question is, does thibodeau want to coach this team? I'll predict his answer: No.

Not interested in Thibs, if we were to go for a defensive coach I'd shoot for UVA coach Tony Bennett.

BTW, is anybody getting any subtle pro-Cleveland vibes regarding these Finals the past few days? Consider:

The Warriors are getting a ton of days off, which they don't really need for rest, and which may dull their focus. Cleveland on the other hand doesn't mind the rest with vets like Lebron and with Kyrie still nursing injury.

Their lead assistant coach Alvin Gentry has been openly flirting with another team and has taken a deal to coach the Pelicans. That has to be a little weird and a bit of a distraction to a team that is in the middle of trying to get a championship.

Meanwhile, Lebron James is still the best player in the world and can dominate when he wants to. They've lost Kevin Love, but Tristan Thompson has been heroic in his place as their starting PF.

Nobody on the Warriors really has championship experience. They're in uncharted territory. Will they choke up or get nervous on the big stage?

I still think the Warriors are better and are talented enough to win it. But I'm starting to think it will be closer than I had previously thought, and that Cleveland is a scary opponent for them after all. I think this one goes 6 or 7 games and will be hotly contested.

I don't think any of that's the case. If anything, Klay needs the time off to pass concussion protocol. I don't think they'll lose focus and aside from LeBron, who in Cleveland has championship experience? James Jones? Remember, Kerr has some championship experience on his resume.

Gentry may be a bit distracted but now that the deal is done, he should be able to fully focus.

And aside from LeBron, there isn't anyone on the Cavs the Warriors shouldn't be able to handle. If anything, the Warriors are in the best position to handle LeBron. They have a ton of swingmen that can rotate onto him, from Klay to Iguodala to Barnes to Green. That's a lot of different looks to give LeBron, both offensively and defensively.

I guess the Suns just hired Earl Watson as an assistant coach, which is kind of weird.

I would assume based on Hornacek knowing him in Utah.

Just heard on Lowe's podcast that Mike D'Antoni interviewed for the Denver job. I like the fit. Interesting considering it was his first spot.

He failed pretty badly there, but I don't know that it was his fault. I'd like to see him coaching again. The league is more fun with him stomping that foot on the sideline.

Agreed. I also just like him in general. He seems like a decent guy and is usually pretty funny.

Wasn't his only season in Denver an accelerated lockout season? You can't judge a coach based on that.
