I think the difference now is that we're legit deep at almost every position and don't have a ton of minutes to give out. Trading draft picks and dumping useful players hurt us in the 7SOL era because we were only ever 6-7 deep. Aside from that elusive PF, which we're platooning with Jae and Cam, we're covered at PG, SG, SF, and C. And we still a roster spot and money left for buyout candidates. I don't think it's cheapness, I think it's strategic this time.

I like having most of the same players back and filling in the holes with new guys. They already know how to play together and what to expect from the coach. No big learning curve. Come out of the gate focused and knowing your role.

We only have one roster spot left. The Payton signing is whatever, but I really think the Kaminsky signing was completely uninspired.

This is where the cheapness complaints are coming from. We had the MLE, BAE and probably a DPE at our disposal and we went the route of using half the MLE, signing 2 minimum guys, eschewing the draft and will let 1.5-2.5 of the exceptions go unused.
Isn't that par for the course since, well, ever? And with a salary bill next year in the ~140M range, and us being a Finals team this year, it is a really hard argument for Jones to make to Sarver that the 3rd string whatever or even 2nd string whatever, is critical to our success and he needs to spend more.

(I can see all of this hurting us again like it did in the 7SOL days when we did stuff like not draft Rondo or Iggy or trade KT AND 2 FIRST ROUND PICKS to salary dump)
It’s a pretty easy argument to make, actually. Part of the reason we lost the finals is because Dario went down and our 3rd string options were unplayable (Frank’s game 6 notwithstanding).
It is an easy basketball argument to make. But how much more profit would Sarver make if we made it one more game and won? I am not sure it covers the cost of several years of lux taxes.

That's not how bankers think about it.

WTF !!

I'd rather see E'Twan Moore come back than Elfrid Payton. Maybe Chris Paul can inspire him a little.

As much of a meh move this is, I think Elfrid is a better PG than Moore.

I remember triple double Elfrid

Honestly the dude can get in the lane and dish so it could be worst. As others said, acceptance of the role is probably the key (well his jumper too) but one thing at a time

I'm just glad he cut off the silly hair that covered his line of vision.

1. Elfrid Payton is capable of passing the ball. If he were capable of shooting, we wouldn't have gotten him for basically vet min. As a third string back up, he's fine. People in NYC hate him: he's coming off his worst year in the NBA and his confidence appears shattered. We'll see if he can put himself back together when the pressure is off.

2. There's increasing talk about a package of Saric and Smith for a 1 year rental of Thaddeus Young. I'd be inclined to say yes.

3. Flex from Jersey indicating there's interest in Larry Nance Jr., but the Cavs' asking price is too probably too high.

Thad Young would be awesome, Larry Nance would be perfect. This could end up a great off season

If so, it was faulty and in need of alignment...

I agree, Larry Nance Jr would be perfect. And the name would come back where it belongs. Full circle.

I would be very very happy with a Dario/Stix/Pick trade for nance

I think Thad is more likely, because it saves over 10M and Nance is still owed 20M (over the next two seasons).

So Thad is only partially guaranteed for this season (6M). I wonder if there is a way we can work out a deal where SA waives him so it only costs 6M, but we can still pick him up for the remainder of the MLE, and he still makes +10M this year. Otherwise he is due to make 14M.

Ya, there’s a chance we could get Thad with just Smith. Nance would surely require more assets

Thads 3P FG% leaves a lot to be desired

Ya, that’s what makes Nance the better target…but I’d also not worry too much about last years numbers. He only took 45 3s. He was a 34% shooter in Indiana when he was shooting 3s.
