Call me crazy, but I wanted a talented player who would contribute to the team for years to come.

IIRC, tons of people liked Sabonis, but not everyone flat out thought we should draft him at 4. Most of us didn't expect him to be as quick or as good a jumper as he is.
Some thought he would be available at 13. I was in the camp that wanted Bender at 4 and Sabonis at 13 to hold us down while Bender learns the ropes.
Some wanted to trade down for Sabonis + an asset.
Some liked Sabonis, but thought it was wiser to gamble on someone with more upside. He's a role player, and Bender might be a Super Role Player.

Bottom line: Bender and Chriss have a long way to go and may never get there, but the opportunity cost on those two is very low. So please everybody stop using them to attack McD. McD has plenty of failings (the BK trade is almost unforgivable, and if there's any truth to this Avery Bradley shit...), but Bender and Chriss don't qualify as major blunders.

They count as blunders.

How you pick two big men in the top-8 and don't take Sabonis with either pick still confounds me.

I agree.Marty [Mori Chu] wrote:How you pick two big men in the top-8 and don't take Sabonis with either pick still confounds me.
Maybe DNA testing should be part of the draft evaluation.
What was the reason to get rid of Monty again? Oh yeah, that guy we drafted rather than Doncic.

The only reason they aren't "major" is because his other blunders are bigger.Cap wrote:Bottom line: Bender and Chriss have a long way to go and may never get there, but the opportunity cost on those two is very low. I liked Sabonis, but there wasn't very many people(I'm talking nationally, not on this site) that had him as a better prospect than either Chriss or Bender.Marty [Mori Chu] wrote:How you pick two big men in the top-8 and don't take Sabonis with either pick still confounds me.
