I can see, from a business perspective the appeal of Doncic. Sarver went over to Europe and watched him and saw the Doncic mania everywhere. Doncic will be a cash cow in the same way Yao was for the Rockets.
That doesn’t make sense to me. Slovenia isn’t nearly the market China is. Not even the same order of magnitude. Even if his experience with Real Madrid also means pulling in some Spanish fans, it's still nothing remotely Yao-like in reach.
According to this, Slovenia is at best 3% of the cash cow market that China is. Very likely much less than that.
Cattle inventory is an odd way to measure it, but cute pun.
The GDP ratio is more than 250:1.

The GDP ratio is more than 250:1.
And the population ratio somewhere 500-1000 : 1
Of course, that means the average Slovenian has more real income than the average Chinese, and one Slovenian is more likely to buy NBA paraphernalia than 2-4 Chinese who have to live on the same income.
Still, none of that changes the basic fact that China is a huge market and Slovenia isn’t.

If we are going to talk about this seriously, it should be noted that Doncic's fans are all over Europe. Eastern Europeans, especially, relate to him regardless of their country of origin. It's still a smaller market, but I bet it isn't too much less than the market for Yao if Luka turns out to be good in the NBA.

I was surprised to see that Doncic played 67 games in Euroleague and ACB last year and is at 61 this year already. I didn't know they play so many games.

Yao was the first (and still only) Chinese player to do anything meaningful in the NBA. An Eastern European in the NBA isn’t nearly as much of a novelty. That market is already open, even if Doncic opens it more. Hence, not as much upward potential.

More upward potential for the NBA, but the team that drafts Doncic gets a HUGE boost in eastern European fans who are on the edge of their seats to see if a kid from their part of the world can be a real star in the NBA.
obvs, China is a bigger market. Just don't discount the passion of European fans.

See if a kid from the part of the world can be a real star in the NBA? He wouldn’t be the first. And I don’t think his predecessors had anything like the kind of marketing impact for their teams that Yao did for the Rockets.

You guys should have watched the Euroleague final game. Doncic has showed a lot of good things but he is not the total package some people are thinking about...
Yikes, your whole post is based on just one game?
Nah. No way. I've watched him many times (you know, being from Spain and a fan of Ream Madrid) and there's no denying that the things he has done at his age are unheard of in Europe since Petrovic. But the EL final is a significant example given the stakes if one looks at more than numbers. You see people throwing around names like Harden, Bird or Manu... Granted, Ayton is probably not going to be Robinson, Ewing or Hakeem, but in his case, the athleticism is obviously there and he doesn't lack skill either. Are his alleged mental blocks true? Does he have the desire to become trascendent? Luka certainly does, but he also comes with legitimate shortcomings as a prospect if you are expecting NBA superstardom from your #1 pick.
always maintained that doncic is a nice player, but the scouts have been overrating him. would honestly be SHOCKED at this point if suns pick him at #1. if the kings select him at #2, he'll be a rubio level bust/disappointment. the guy needs to go to the right team to be considered a success.

I too think that during the euroleague final-four Doncic was really out of shape and this ultimately affected his play. Hence the question regarding his athleticism arouse. Once he gets the right stamina, muscle-fat ratio, etc. we will see a more nimble version of him.
youre supposed to be able as a g/sf player to take a 7footer off the dribble from the perimeter.
Here's The Ringer talking draft. Interesting listen.
They prefer Luca, and can't imagine anyone thinking a traditional center should be one of the top picks. It's the athletic wings that win for you now.
If this is the case, why are so many people holding out hope that they might get a chance to trade for AD? Is it because he moves like a wing and shoots like a wing, but is 7' and can score at the basket, rebound and block shots?

AD is not a traditional center, but I'll answer the question anyway. Folks want AD because he would be a heck of a secondary scoring option on a team with good perimeter play.

It is because he is a top 5 player in the league. People would be clamoring to pick up any of those players. And as OG said, he isn't a traditional center by a long shot.

Is KAT a traditional center? Seems that teams are lining up to trade for him too. Maybe they need to tell all players, if you can't shoot consistently from the outside your options will be limited in today's game.

That is already being said. Look at the guys that get the most minutes in the league. You probably won't find more than a single top 10 team that has more than 1 guy in their main rotation that can't hit 3s better than 33%.

There are 100 guys in the league that play significant NBA minutes (>24 mpg) at any position. Of those 100, only 20 can't hit a 3 better than 33%. Of those 20, only these 6 guys made it out of the first round.
Word is that KP could have been had for the 4th pick last year, but KP was skeptical of coming to Phx. This was during his mini spat with the Knicks and Phil, I believe. Do you think he's available this year after tearing his ACL and most likely missing the entire year? Would you even try to go after him? Would he have a change of heart if the Suns drafted Luka? Would the Suns want to wait a year for him to come back, and what would the asking price be?

Late to the party but I have been celebrating ever since! Can't believe we got the number 1 pick! First time I've had hope as a Suns fan in a long time. I'd prefer Doncic but I won't be upset if it's Ayton.
Doncic- I love his feel for the game and just see him as a way more athletic Nash. I like his motor and that he wins. He knows the pick and roll game already. I see his ceiling as slightly lower than Ayton but his chance of failure, I think, is much lower than Ayton. He's like a taller J-Will. Never draft for need but we NEED both a PG and a big guy so I think that is moot.
Ayton- I love his length, athleticism and potential. I think he could be a Embiid Durant hybrid, whatever that may be. I think there's alot of "If's" with him right now. I haven't seen a great motor. Almost exactly how Drummond played in college so he could turn it on at the next level. I think he has the potential to be great but there's a risk he's Anthony Bennett. He didn't dominate like I expected him to at Arizona.
