Suns News: Offseason
Re: Suns News: Offseason
It's possible that the Suns could trade for CP3, while keeping Oubre. I don't know how realistic that is, but it is possible from what I've seen. We'll see pretty soon I think.

Re: Suns News: Offseason
It'd be something else to get Paul in a deal for just Rubio and Frank, maybe the 10th pick. I'd still be concerned about frontcourt depth and Sarver going into his pockets.
Re: Suns News: Offseason
Yeah, it would be hard to see Sarver really investing hard into the team. He is always well aware of the bottom line, and if the fans aren't in the building...yikes.

Re: Suns News: Offseason
I don’t think there’s anyway to do that cap wise. Oubre has to be involved for salary purposes. I guess you could conceivably sign and trade Saric with Rubio for him perhaps.

Re: Suns News: Offseason
I believe you are right. I though it was possible if we renounced to everything (included #10), but it's not the case for around ~$1M as Paul-Booker-Oubre-Ayton-Bridges-Cam and min holds are 109.1M, and the cap will be at 108M.
The only way would be to operate as an over the cap team and work a sign and trade, probably with Saric like you said. Something like Paul for Rubio-Saric-Jerome-Leque-Kaminsky and whatever extra asset OKC extracts from Jones, if any (I wouldn't know what to expect, from #10 to a future inconsequential protected 1stR).
This has the benefit that we could use the full MLE and the BE to add to Paul-Booker-Bridges-Cam-Ayton-Oubre-Payne-#10, while also keeping Carter's rights (bringing him back would be important in this scenario).
Gotta admit that such roster would look extremely interesting and doesn't mortgage the future at all since Paul expires in two seasons. I know Paul is questionable form a character and injury standpoint, but if this was on the table, it would be hard to say no to me.
Re: Suns News: Offseason
Oubre + Kaminsky + Rubio passes the trade test after November 16th.
I'd really prefer to hang onto the 10th pick: Vassell, Nesmith, Halibuton, and a couple others (Woodard, Bane) would all be good fits in Phoenix. If you have a couple stars on huge contracts, you need guys on rookie scale to fill the gaps.
Re: Suns News: Offseason
Who exactly is "Flex from Jersey" and why do we trust his word on Suns-related trade rumors? What's the point of reporting such poorly sourced gossip?
Also why should we trade for an aging PG, near the end of his career, who makes $40m+ for several years to come, who routinely misses 20-25 games a year, and consistently chokes in the 1st/2nd round of the playoffs every time? Is that really progress for our young team?

Choking in the 1st/2nd round of the playoffs would be progress, yes.Mori Chu wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 9:25 amAlso why should we trade for an aging PG, near the end of his career, who makes $40m+ for several years to come, who routinely misses 20-25 games a year, and consistently chokes in the 1st/2nd round of the playoffs every time? I’m not sold that going after Paul is the best thing for the long term, but it would probably provide some progress in the short term.

Your first paragraph I agree with. I have no clue who he is and don’t put any value into what he says. However, there is much more CP3 to Phx rumors than just flex from Jersey.Mori Chu wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 9:25 amWho exactly is "Flex from Jersey" and why do we trust his word on Suns-related trade rumors? As for why to trade for CP3. He is older, but he’s still an all-star level pg. He took an OKC team that most thought was a lottery team and snagged a 5 seed in a very good conference. He gets paid a ton, but it’s just 2 years. He comes off the cap right before Ayton and Bridges would re-sign. We could potentially have a lot of cap space in 2022.
As for injuries, he’s missed on average 13 games a year the last 6 years. Rubio has missed 15. Though that’s counting 2015 when he missed 60. Take that out and it’s 8. Still not a huge difference. And CP3 only missed 2 last year.
I also don’t buy the CP3 chokes every year in the playoffs. Go look at his numbers. Especially look at the last game of series. He produces. He’s like 21/8/5/2 in the playoffs and shoots 48/37/85. That clippers team choked once against the rockets and that rep has unfairly stuck with CP3. Remember, they had the ‘18 Warriors down 3-2 until CP3 got hurt.
Now I think there are reasons to not do this trade, but it’s not for what will happen on the court these next two years. It’s more about the years after. I’m not worried about losing Rubio, I doubt he’d have been here beyond his current contract anyways and CP3 is definitely an upgrade. But Oubre is a 24 year old 2-way wing. He’s valuable and could be a pretty valuable piece moving forward for us. Either as a player or an asset. I don’t necessarily think giving him up to be a 2nd round playoff team for 2 years is the right call. Especially when I think we can get to that level and not compromise the future a bit.
If we were getting some draft capital back, I could get more behind it.
One last thing..since the suns last made the playoffs in 2010:
Chris Paul has been to the playoffs 10 times(out of 10 seasons)
He’s won 6 playoff series
He’s played in 98 total playoff games, winning 46.
Yes there are better playoff resumes out there, but we’re also not asking him to be our #1 guy. That’s Bookers job. If we fill out the bench right, a CP3/Booker/Bridges/Johnson/Ayton team will be in the 4-6 range in the west IMO. We’d be relevant, we’d be an up and coming team, and FA would take notice come 2022 when we’d have a lot of cap space. Plus, we’d have 2 years for CP3 to mentor our pg of the future(assuming we take one at 10).
I’d prefer to go the FVV route, but I’d understand a CP3 trade.
Re: Suns News: Offseason
Well said. Plus he does look pretty good in an orange uni

Re: Suns News: Offseason
There are a lot of good backcourts in the NBA to tbh. Even Portland with Dame and CJ.
Re: Suns News: Offseason
Plenty of you are making good and fair posts about the pros and cons of trading for CP3, and thanks for that. I don't hate the guy. I think in a straight swap for Rubio, he would make us better for 1-2 years. I don't know if I like the cost/benefit of swapping what we'd probably swap to get him, namely Rubio, Oubre, and maybe a pick. OKC considers CP3 to be an asset and they're hoping to sell him off to get better assets for their team. We'd be really handing them several nice assets for a PG who isn't part of their future. I see no reason to give them so much when they don't really want to keep CP3 anyway and he doesn't want to stay there.
Re: Suns News: Offseason
Yeah, I don't hate him. He's one of the smartest guys in the league. I'd just much prefer FVV due to the age difference. A couple years of CP3 would be nice for finally getting back to the playoffs though.
Synchronicity and all that jazz, man.

Yeah, I was much more excited about the FVV rumor than I am about this one.

Re: Suns News: Offseason
Going backwards. Progress in the short term(2 yrs) is going to help with progress in the long term with this young team. Do you really think that the Suns should chance not making the playoffs this yr isn't going to hurt the Suns in the future?Mori Chu wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 9:25 amWho exactly is "Flex from Jersey" and why do we trust his word on Suns-related trade rumors? Flex is a very connected fan of the Suns, with a lot of very credible sources in the league office. He knew that Kelly was going to be out before it was reported, with his knee injury. He's been spot on for a number of things that are going on in the league office and talks. Put some respect on my man's name.

Re: Suns News: Offseason
If CP3 rumors are real, I doubt that the FVV signing takes place, but if they really want to do it, they could actually get both done. It would just be having to sign FVV first in FA and the draft, and then make the trade for CP3. I think you would have to make sure that you brought back Saric and Carter though.Split T wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 10:25 amYour first paragraph I agree with. I would probably rather sign FVV and keep Oubre and Rubio, but CP3 is a damn good player. Heck, they almost beat the Suns in the bubble when it was just him and relatively a bunch of scrubs.

Re: Suns News: Offseason
The CP3 rumors have made sense to me since I first listened to his video last week(?). A deal certainly has a non-zero possibility in my mind.
I'm just not convinced Sarver will agree to a substantial salary increase with the roster this season.

Re: Suns News: Offseason
Idk, he has said that he would go over the cap, and it's possible that he goes over the cap whether he trades for him or not, or when he's traded for. It's not really going to be much more than $10 mil over the cap either way. I think they need to do something to make sure that Booker is happy and doesn't want out because he doesn't see them try to make a difference.Flagrant Fowl wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 3:25 pmThe CP3 rumors have made sense to me since I first listened to his video last week(?). But in your defense, he's never had to deal with not having fans in the stands(I should clarify that, since they have had only sparse crowds the last 10 yrs).
