Each side has a set of beliefs about the other side and FOX does a great job of reinforcing those beliefs for the right. It has been a huge success for FOX and Rupert Murdoch. They had just about cornered the market on conservative viewers. They have a little more competition now thanks to Trump using One America as leverage against FOX News when FOX started getting critical of Trump. FOX has mostly come back into full compliance with with Trumps beliefs and the majority of Republicans in Congress who were upset with Trump over Jan 6 and had made their displeasure known have also come back into full compliance except a few brave Republicans willing to risk Trumps wrath.
The left has a set of beliefs about the right that is reinforced by places like MSNBC and CNN.

I watched Bill Maher tonight and he had on two guests from polar opposites politically that already disliked each other before coming on the show. The animosity got pretty intense. Then Bill went into a comedy sketch and both guys busted up laughing at all the jokes. Then they went back into another touchy subject and got heated with each other again. Then Bill went into a comedy sketch and they both busted out laughing at all the jokes. Bill pointed out that comedy kind of brought them together.
I played for a bunch of people at a restaurant tonight. They were probably a mix of politics. Music brought them together.
The Suns made it to the finals. A gazillion people came out of the woodwork as Suns fans. They were probably a mix of politics. The home team winning brought them together as one.
Like Bill Maher said tonight, there are no qualifications for running for Congress. You can’t vote if you are in prison but, you can run for Congress. You don’t even need a HS diploma either. These people in Congress have a cushy job with benefits. They want to hang onto those seats. Some might be prone to doing unscrupulous things to stay in office.
I would hope a leader/s would come along who had morals, a brain, empathy and the ability, desire and charisma to unify the nation, not divide. Rupert Murdoch could do the right thing and not push his people at FOX to intentionally divide the nation. Go there and what do you see on their front page. Probably 3-4 articles about the top Dems and Biden doing something bad and scandalous. Another story about a black man beating up a white woman and stealing her money. Another one about a Mexican who raped a girl somewhere. People are robbed, raped and beaten all over the US every day. FOX chooses to run those stories because it shows minorities in a bad light, reinforcing those beliefs again.
What to do about it? Wish I knew. What we have right now isn’t working.

They are part of the problem. They intentionally divide and attempt to portray Democrats as the enemy of the people. Maybe the real illness is Americans desperately need someone to hate so we can fight against this enemy. It’s easier to be united when we have a common enemy as in WWII. Then it’s us against them. Right now in America ‘them’ is half of America. I strongly disagree with this. The Murdock family don't just repeat and reinforce what conservative republicans have always believed. They literally direct the beliefs of their millions of viewers, not just reinforce it.
Before Fox News was the #1 cable news show, conservative Republicans believed in fiscal responsibility, no-welfare state, strong military, Laissez-faire economics, and no abortion.
The only one left is no abortion. The deficit ballooned under Trump and they applauded it (remember how much they got in tax cuts)? The rural farmers that are 99.9% Trump voters were really happy to get their 'welfare' once his trade negotiations with China blew up and they couldn't sell their corn or soy beans anymore. Fox News is very anti-military intelligence, because they are caught up in all of this. Most republicans now say they trust Putin over our own military commanders! Remember all of the "shut down twitter/facebook/whatever doesn't let us lie over and over again?" Very non-laissez-faire.
I think you said your parents (or maybe just your mom) are very Trumpy nowadays. If 10 years ago you asked if she supported what she does today, I am pretty sure the answer would be no.

The beliefs I was talking about are all the same ones since I was a kid. Dems are Commies, like high taxes, want to take your guns, want to take your religion, kill babies, generally take all your freedoms away. Minorities are bad and are bad people but, we’re not racists. FOX News reinforces those fears and preys upon them.
I don’t think my mother really knows what she supports other than Republicans. She knows that Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer are evil. She liked Biden at the start of the election. Now she thinks he’s Satan.
This is one of the latest mailings to her. It’s a thank you letter thanking Trump from Trump asking for money to stop socialist ruin.

I still think you are under-selling how much they are directing the narrative instead of simply re-enforcing one that is already there. I mean, sure they play the hits like every partisan source, but they direct a lot more.
